The term is heard on TV and in conversation, but what is a Genetically Modified Organism or GMO. A GMO is an organism plant that’s genes have been changed in a controlled way in order to produce an organism with specific characteristics. GMOs are organisms whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA (gene splicing), gene modification and transgenic technology. GMO’s creates plants, animal, bacterial and viral genes that are not created by nature or natural cross breeding. Genetically modified foods raise issues such as health effects, economics in other countries, and ethical problems.
Most of the buzz about GMOs come from the use of them in plants that are consumed by the general population. Scientists manipulate the plant

A group of Swiss researchers have created a strain of “golden” rice that is packed full of beta-carotene which our body converts into vitamin A. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that is good for your eyes and skin that is found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. By the average person eating 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day they will intake 6-8 mg of beta-carotene. Rice feeds 50 percent of the world so having rice that is enriched with vitamin A through beta-carotene will help nourish the impoverished people of the world and reduce the vitamin A deficiency. Scientists have also created bruise-free potatoes that reduce the cancer causing chemicals that are produced when spuds become french fries. Along with these creative ways to disguise GMOs in a good way, scientists have created many other GMOs to put into food that will preserve their shelf life and speed up the growing…show more content…
Since we have advanced our technology and research so much in the past few years, the Office of Science at the U.S. Department of Energy said that because of GMO’s scientist are able to create foods with better taste, more nutritional value, and more resistance to disease and pest. Many people are concerned with the genetically modified organisms that are being put into their foods because of the risk factors that come along with them. Since genetically modified organisms are such a new way of growing food we are not fully aware of the health risks. Some of the health concerns have already come about are increased allergies, antibiotic resistance, other factors we aren’t aware of. When GMOs are put into our food their genetic makeup is altered. Scientists are taking genes from certain foods and adding them to other foods which has been known to cause people to have allergic reactions to foods that they once ate normally. This can be very dangerous to all people and not just people with typical food allergies. While scientists think they are helping human health by changing the food and making it more “nutritious”, they are actually harming more people than needed. Some GMO’s have also caused antibiotic resistance for people. This is a huge problem because viruses and infections are not going away anytime soon.
