On the surface, Islam and Christianity appear to have very little in common, however, as you get deeper into areas such as rituals, beliefs, ethics, founders, and sacred objects, the two show strong mutual similarities, particularly in the fundamental areas, while being totally different. In this essay I will compare and contrast many of the facets that make up the worlds largest and most recognized religions, Christianity and Islam.

Living and perpetuating a life of peace are central to the Christian and Jewish religious expressions. The teachings of peace which underpin both Christianity and Judaism are existent in their sacred texts; The Bible for Christians, The Torah and Mishnah Torah for Jewish adherents. Albeit peace is of paramount importance to both traditions, the concept of peace is expressed differently. Christians believe the only way complete peace can be attained is through the full acceptance of Jesus Christ, the incarnate.

The bible, Quran and Hadith are respected texts and are regarded as the books of truth. Believers take these sacred texts as the revealed message from God – the truth. As such, they are used as a guide to life in the pursuit of peace between people and also between people and God. Jesus and Muhammad had a role in spreading the teaching of peace. To understand how the Muslims and Christians view peace it is imperative to first understand what peace means. Most people would refer to peace as freedom of war, disagreements, conflict and calmness of mind. To understand the roles of Christianity and Islam in the teaching of peace the concepts of inner peace, world and society peace has to be addressed, for both Christians and Muslims, inner peace refers to the state of calmness and tranquility experienced by the individual. It is often understood to be associated with the spiritual peace with God/Jesus for Christians and spiritual peace with Allah who desires peace for Muslims. Muslims believe that it is through complete submission to Allah also called the Greater Jihad that an individual may achieve inner peace. The Quran states clearly that in order to achieve world peace, all people must submit to Allah as they believe all people of the Muslim community around the world are one community. They believe that there can be no world/universal peace or the lesser Jihad without the greater Jihad which is misunderstood by many Islamic and non-Islamic people.

Islam means 'submission to one God'. Muslims believe that Mohammad is the last prophet of Allah and everyone should worship him.

According to Smith, the world Islam is “derived from the root s-l-m, which means primarily “peace” but in a secondary sense “surrender,” its full connotation is “the peace that comes when one’s life is surrendered to God” (Smith 222). Therefore, Islam is a religion, like Buddhism, is attributed to seeking cultivation, and its followers, also known as Muslims, lives being totally surrendered to God.

How have the principal teachings on peace in two religious traditions guided their contribution to the achievement of both inner and world peace? Christianity and Islam have a common origin as religions of peace and each has peace as a foundational element of its beliefs. In the sacred text of each, peace is regarded as a virtue. Both teach peace as key parts of their principal beliefs.

Christianity and Islam are wide spread religions which impact the lives of believers spiritually. Both religions have had substantial impact on the course of history and have formed the basis of many countries laws and are highly recognized by governments. Though Christianity is more widely known, they both pose the same challenges to each other. Considering the similarities and differences of Christianity and Islam, it can be said they are both very different.

Nowadays, citizens often hear about the troubles Islamist radicals bring to countries, especially in the U.S. and Europe. It is known that people have several opinions on this particular religion, but the real question to be asked is whether Islam is really a religion of violence or peace. There are many Islamist groups- Isis and al-Quaida for example- that are responsible for acts of terrorism. For instance, the bombing of the twin towers in 2001 in New York, the London terrorist bombings that killed 52 innocent lives, the many bombings and attacks in Paris, etc. Personally, I think Islam is neither a religion of peace nor violence. Islam is not revolving around the idea of violence, but they don’t necessarily act in a tranquil manner. Moreover, Islam is not just a religion to its followers, it is more an ideology whereas its followers live for their religion; I think this is why some go to such extreme measures.

Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom’ in other words this verse calls for the mass extermination or genocide of non-Muslims and non-believers, how can you then call Islam a religion of peace? There are hundreds of other verses and extracts of which I could highlight however I think it will be more beneficial to point out the major misconceptions of Islam and also the best way of going about a reformation.

Muslims for the most part believe that Islam brings together all religions in that all prophets are honored as messengers from the one true God, Allah. Islam in general considers itself to be a universal religion at its purest form. Allah is even seen as the all knowing creator of all things wordly and devine. Allahs creation is governed by devine set laws and that peace can only be found through the knowledge of and obeyence of these laws. Muslims believe that there needs to be complete surrender to Allah to prove their true belief. In Islam, all humans will be resurrected for a final judgement of their deeds and heaven awaits the faithful and hell awaits the infidel which are the unfaithful.

The message of peace is a fundamental universal concern which is relevant throughout our world today. Peace is not merely the ‘absence of war’, but a state of mind in which a sense of tranquillity comes from actively working towards right relationships with individuals and God. To understand the way in which Muslims and Christians view peace it is imperative to understand the source of the teachings for each religion. The principles teachings of peace for Both Christianity and Islam are primarily found in the sacred texts of both religious traditions. Christianity looks to the bible and specifically the New Testament for teachings about peace, whereas Islam focuses’ on the Qur’an and Hadith to guide their beliefs of peace. These sacred

This can be very confusing for a westerner at first. Instead of being just part of life, as many people view religion in the west, Islamic followers believe it is everything to them.
