When Malala Stood Up For Women's Rights

“I speak- not for myself, but for all girls and boys. I raise up my voice, for those without a voice can be heard.” Malala once spoke these words hoping to encourage more young girls and boys to speak up for what they believe. In Malala’s case she was standing up, and still is, for girls all over the world to have an education. Since Malala was young, she has had a strong interest in politics and education. These interests have led her to many achievements, which greatly affects the world today.

Malala began her activism by writing blogs for the BBC about her life under Taliban rule, using the pen name “Gul Makai” to protect her identity (Biography.com Editors). She additionally wrote her views on the importance of education for girls all over the world, but especially in her country (Biography.com Editors). After she was profiled in a New York Times document entry, Malala rose to fame as a speaker promoting education for girls in the Swat Valley of Pakistan (Biograhy.com Editors). On October 9, 2012 Malala was shot in the head and neck by Taliban members who had boarded her schoolbus on her way back home (Robison 1). She was shot when she was just fifteen years old (Biography.com Editors). She struggled to survive, remaining in critical condition for an extended period of time (Robison 1). To begin with, even though it may be difficult, anybody can make a difference through bravery and encouragement from family. Malala, at a young age, recognized that females did not have an opportunity to be educated with the Taliban’s presence. She arguably declared that “Education is [their] right. Just as it is [their] right to sing and play” and displaying that she would not give up. Her desire to change the inequality in Swat motivated her to publicly speak against the unfair treatment. Most females in Swat did not have the faith Malala had because their society favored males. This confidence allowed Malala to go against the norm, even if it made her uncomfortable. Next, family support is vital to creating change. Malala’s parents never gave up on her and they introduced her to the right path in life. Malala states that her parents “never once suggested [she] should withdraw from school,” which explains why she was able to excel in her dreams (146). Malala looks up to her father, as he stands up for what he believes in even when times are rough. Moreover, they both spoke against the Taliban, knowing that there were risks involved. Starting when she was very young, Malala Yousafzai fought for education. She made important speeches to try to bring change in her country, while going to school and living her life like the Talibans hadn't threatened her. She was only was 14 years old when they shot her. For safety reasons, she needed to be transferred to England and is now living there. One year later, at 15 years old, she published her book, I am Malala. At 16 years old, she received the Nobel Prize of Peace. She was the youngest person to ever receive a Nobel Prize. Now 19 years old, she keeps fighting and hopes to one day return to her country.

She is a human rights activist who stands up for the rights of women and girls and is working towards a worldwide access to education for women. First of all, Malala has a Malala Fund. This fund believes that girls should speak for themselves and that every girl needs at least 12 years of education says the Malala Fund article “What We Do”. They encourage the girls ,who go on their website, to help the fund or if they need help ,because they can’t go to school, they give encouraging words to help. After reading Malala’s story, it is hard to believe that the events she speaks of are occurring in our lifetime. Being a female born in a developed country has given me opportunities that are unimaginable in other places around the world. Like most children living in the United States, education was never something that was deprived. American students are almost unconscious about why we are put into school and the importance of it. Education is important to learn about the world we live in and to think for ourselves, expanding possibilities of making our society a better place. Although sometimes it may feel like we are put into an educational prison since the age of 4, we are privileged to be able to expand our mindsets and challenge the beliefs of others using expert opinions. Another privilege I have living in the United States is the freedom to speak out for my rights and bring others together and make our voices heard by having the freedom to protest. Something that cannot be accomplished in third world countries without risking their lives and of their families. Malala’s story is important because she shed light on a significant and sensitive topic that needs to be heard to get the help from people around the world to make a change. Malala’s personal story encouraged me to admire life because she had the support of her family, fought for her rights, and wanted to make a change in her country.
