What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a term we hear all too often from car accident victims. When someone is struck from behind, following an auto accident person being hit suffers from whiplash. This occurs when the head and neck is forcefully thrusted forward and then backwards again. This is what doctors and chiropractors call neck strain or neck sprain. In accidents, where patients suffer whiplash injuries the damage affects the discs, nerve roots, intervertebral joints, the ligaments and the cervical muscles.

Unlike doctors, a chiropractor offer and holistic and alternatives treatments to treat a variety of physical ailments. When you visit the chiropractor, you are asked a series of questions regarding your accident or injury. The chiropractor may perform a physical exam to check the flexibility of your joints. This is called ROM or range-of-motion. What we are looking for are signs of tenderness and movement limitation following pain.
We normally order an X-ray to confirm or rule out other possible causes of your pain such as arthritis. Other tests we may order are MRIs, and CT scans. These tests show us if there is any inflammation build up in the nerves, spinal cords or soft tissue areas. Sometimes a PET scan may be necessary, if brain injury damage is suspected. After all the tests are in and are evaluated, we can then move forward with a treatment plan.
