The book White Dolphin is all about a young girl named Kara. She ,unfortunately, goes through a terrible time starting with the disappearance of her mother and believing she is dead, too dealing with contamination in the local coral. When Kara is walking one day with a guy she was not fond of, Felix, they came across a white dolphin that was trapped in netting and was struggling to survive. Kara and Felix came together to save the baby white dolphin, reunite him with his mother, and stop the destruction of the reefs. Branching off of that, there is a song that represents each character. The first song is “Fight Song” which goes along with the character Kara, and then there is “Give Your Heart a Break” which represents Kara’s dad, lastly “I Knew You Were Trouble” which represents Jake.
To start off the song “Fight Song” best represents Kara because she has to be a fighter and not give up. In the song, Rachel sings, “I might only have one match but I can make an explosion,” (Rachel Platten). Then in the book, Kara states, “I’m fine,’ I say. I tuck my hands under my armpits to warm them up and hide the blueness of

In the song Taylor Swift sings, “I knew you were trouble when you walked in,” (Taylor Swift). This quote from the songs represents Jake because when he went places he gave off a bad vibe and would belittle people. In the book Kara’s dad says, “Keep out of Jake’s way,” he says. “He’s got a nose for trouble, like his dad,” (Lewis 22). This quote ties along with the song by showing that he gave a bad vibe to people around him. Jake’s dad was the man who was tearing up the reefs and was a very cruel man, and people in the community believed his son would be exactly like him. At times Jake would act like his father and tease Kara about her missing mother and more. To sum it up, Jake was a cruel and nasty person that took after the role of his father, but turned his life around in the
According to the text in the first 3 chapters, Jake Semple is headstrong, through his actions and choices. This tells me that Jake is more than people think he is. The first piece of evidence that I have is that Jake burned down his school. My second piece of evidence is that Jake Semple smoking, which leads people to think he is bad because most 13-year-olds do not smoke. The final piece of evidence is that Jake disobeys orders and does bad things in order to see his parents again.
Herman Melville, in his epic novel Moby-Dick, utilizes the symbolism of the color of the Great White Whale to demonstrate his theme of duality. However, Captain Ahab tragically had a single mind set towards Moby Dick, as he believed that the whale was the symbol of the world's evil and had to be destroyed. On the other hand, Ishmael sees that the color white can mean many various and opposing things. It would be dangerous to settle upon any one single meaning. In the chapter, The Whiteness of the Whale, Melville explains the importance of duality of meaning in the world, as opposed to man's (and Ahab's) desire to see only one meaning in any one thing. Melville utilizes the symbol of the
She sees Jake as an unintelligent, brainless, violence obsessed marine who doesn’t deserve a place in her program. As time progresses, Grace grows fond of Jake, his helpful tendencies and selflessness.
In the book, A Long Walk to Water, by Linda Sue Park, Salva learns to believe in himself and not let anyone bring him down.
Jake is a [seemingly] mentally unstable drifter who wanders into town with muddled and fanatical plans for a socialist uprising. He seems to be bipolar and his tone is ever changing; from knowledgeable rationality to angrily aggressive in a split second. Jake’s first few weeks in town were spent at Biff Brannon's New York Café. After finally meeting someone that he could relate to, Singer, he decided to stay in town and takes a job as a carnival worker. He is obsessive in his aspiration to see the labor force rebel. Jake is the only one, out of all the main characters, who does not have one confidant other than Singer. Jake spent a substantial amount of time sharing his hopes and dreams with Singer. When Singer dies Jake has a very difficult
The role of Lum in Truth and Bright Water, as mentioned before, is similar to Harlen in Medicine River. He also serves as the protagonist's best friend and companion while specifically being related. However, unlike Harlen, Lum is seen as a positive and negative influence towards the protagonist. As Tecumseh's older cousin, Lum is often seen making fun of his cowardly nature. In some instances, he is even seen bullying him.
In the novel “rumble fish” by S.E.Hinton, rusty James is a tough teenager but at the same time he is an emotional wreck. James is a high school boy who is in a gang and likes to get into fights. He loves to fight it makes him feel tougher, he says “I feel so good. I Love fights. I love how I feel before a fight kind of high like I can do anything” (Hinton 18). James is a fighter at the young age of fourteen years old, he looks up to his brother to become tougher and a leader that everyone respects. Moreover, even though it looks like James is a tough kid by his actions, he masks the insecurities and vulnerability just beneath the surface. The first and main time Cole acts up in this story is when he beats up Peter Driscal for telling on him that he broke into a hardware store. He beat up Peter so badly that he had speech slur ever since. That was the worst time he had acted up, but there were many other times. Second, whenever Garvey is trying to teach him a lesson with ingredients for a cake, and Cole got so mad and swiped his arm across the table knocking off all of the ingredients to the floor. Cole usually acts up when he knows he’s wrong, when he is afraid, or when something isn’t afraid of him. He is afraid of the Spirit Bear, so he wants to kill it so he doesn’t have to be afraid anymore. In the book it says “He flung the spear with all his strength, fully intending to kill” (Mikaelsen 77). Those are some examples of how Cole gets violent at the start of the book.
Jackie Craig is seen as nice character in the book “Whale Talk”, but something about him is that he doesn’t speak, you may get a word here or there. He is seen as a minor character. Jackie is seen as being a loyal teammate to the team. For Jackie Craig a physical description is easy. He would blend in with everyone because of his plain characteristics.
Two children one girl and one boy both stranded on an unknown island after their ship to San Francisco set on fire, because of their sudden leave off the ship the two children are stranded with no food, water, and very little clothing. As the two young children grow older on the island the two find out the meaning of love and life as they search for a way off the island and back home to their families who are looking aimlessly for them. The blue lagoon`s setting is one of the most important aspects of the novel because it shows growth within the children who become adventurous young adults, the island also shows independence because the two children grow up without any adults except for paddy who tragically died, and it represents love through
This shows he is hard working and not a lazy kid, but when you figure out that his dad beats him and takes the money Jake earns at work to buy alcohol, you understand why Jake is the way he is. His father provides him with a shack as a shelter, but on most nights Jake spends his nights sleeping in a trash can. To me, this shows Jake’s great maturity for his age accepting the conditions he is faced with. In my opinion, this also shows his toughness and brevity to endure these rough situations that he is forced to be in the middle of. A part in the book that I found very symbolic of a theme was when Jake was caught by Mr. Gerbati stealing out of his business’s money safe. Although Mr. Gerbati was very upset, from my point of view, it seemed as if he understood why Jake was doing something like that. Mr. Gerbati was very firm with his voice, but told Jake he was willing to take care of him. In my opinion, this is the beginning of a very important recurring theme in this story, transformation.
Imagine losing everything all in one instant. In Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch that is exactly what happens to the main character Theo. Everything he knew and loved is taken away without warning. He has a very difficult time coping with the loss of his mother, and tries to escape through drugs. The drawing and the book both capture the loss Theo suffers and how it affects his life.
Wolf in White Van I wrote Wolf in White Van after wanting to chronicle the rough life of a teen in some aspect. I myself had a rough upbringing and was self destructive as a teenager. I once said "Your intelligence doesn't override your desire to destroy yourself.” But these things inspired me to write the story of Sean Phillips.
The song “Warrior” by Demi Lovato relates to the experiences students in the book underwent. She sings about the abuse from that she sustained from her father. Throughout the book and song, the message, “Stay strong despite all
