William Apess was a Native American Methodist minister from Massachusetts with a voice that wanted to be heard. He was one of the first to call out racism against people of color and its ties to Christianity, as he was a very reglious man. Being that he was religious, he didn't see how there could be love from God and Christ but such bitter racism against Native Americans and slaves. His paper sermon "An Indian's Looking-Glass for the White Man", expresses his animosity and confusion towards the colonist, also known as the white people. William showed how hypocritical and unholy these colonist actually were, and this sermon opens your eyes more than ever before. He is stating that God does not care for the color of your skin or what you may look like, but rather how moral you are. How much do you really care about other people? What were you willing to do for someone in need of help? These are just a few questions that God may ask someone. We share the same God, and that God does not pick and choose who he loves based on their outward physique. God will see everything and punish those accordingly, those who are not righteous and who use God as an excuse to do evil. "I would ask you if you would like to be disfranchised from all your rights, merely because your skin is white, for no other crime. I'll venture and say, these very characters who hold the skin to be such a barrier in the way would be the first to cry out, "Injustice! Awful injustice!" As Indians, we have done absolutely nothing foul or cruel to anyone but yet you still choose to treat us poorly and take all of the rights that we have away, simply just because our skin is not like yours.
