Reading Response: Multiculturalism and White Privilege For the first reading response, the two articles that will be analyzed and discussed in depth are “Defense of Official Multiculturalism and Recognition of the Necessity of Critical Anti-Racism” by George Jerry Sefa Dei, and “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy McIntosh. The main themes of the articles are white privilege and multiculturalism. Both authors inspect the theory of anti-racism in different approaches. However, both Dei and McIntosh discuss the issues surrounding race and power dynamics.

While the goal of multiculturalism may be to promote diversity and be accepting of other cultures, many end up creating a barrier instead and treating people as different, which creates more boundaries. Instead, rather than focusing on different aspects of a person’s culture such as food, clothing, music and so forth, there should be a focus on how people from different cultures continue to experience racism. The goal is to eradicate racism and to so, we need to first understand the experiences that people of a minority group go through in their day to day lives. Dei mentions that many immigrants may face problems within the Canadian society through education, employment, the justice system and so forth. (2011). There are also issues regarding power and sharing resources which must also discussed. She explains that we are taught racism is something that occurs to people of color. However, white people are not taught that they have privileges that they have not earned, which they also benefit from. McIntosh explains how white privilege is “as an invisible package of unearned assets” (McIntosh, 1998, p.74). She demonstrates that these privileges can be used but she must stay oblivious to using these privileges. She uses the example of the power imbalance between men and women. Men may be accepting of wanting women to have more rights. However, McIntosh argues that many would be unwilling to accept that men are actually “oveprivileged”, and would not want to lessen their privileges (1998). She also mentions how in school, she was not taught to be someone who had unfair advantages, and was not taught to see herself as an oppressor. Many children who are white are not aware of these privileges that they have, and may take for granted. Thus, they may grow up believing that this is just the way the world works and that there is nothing unfair about it. McIntosh provides a list of daily effects of her white privilege which she recognizes that as a white person, she is given these effects based on her race. She points that her “skin color was an asset” (p. 77) and that being white is also a form of protection. This checklist shows that there is an imbalance of power and that there are still many
