Who Is Abigail's Motivation In The Crucible

The entire book “The Crucible” is written based upon the Salem Witch Trials. There is constant paranoia about who is a witch in the town and Abigail Williams uses this to get what she wants. Abigail is motivated to keep the fear of witchcraft alive in the town of Salem because of her desire to be with John proctor, to get rid of her competition, Elizabeth Proctor, and with her idea for god to cleanse the town. To begin with, Abigail wants to keep the fear of Witchcraft alive in salem because she wants to be with John Proctor. For Example, when Abigail and John talk in Act I Abigail says, “Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be- Proctor: You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth! Abigail: She's blackening my name in the village! She's telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a- Proctor: Do you wish for Whippin?” (Miller I, 23-24). Abigail pretends she's angry because of her reputation being ruined by Elizabeth, but she really just envy’s John and Elizabeth’s marriage. …show more content…

Abigail does this by framing her with a poppet. To explain, when Cheever comes to The proctor residence he tells them, “Why-it is a needle! Herrick, Herrick, it’s a needle… Abigail Williams, sir. She sat to dinner in Reverend Parris’s house tonight, and without word not warning she falls to the floor… as he goes to save her, and, stuck two inches in her flesh of her belly, he draws a needle out. And demandin’ of her how she come to be so stabbes, she-testify it were your wife’s familiar spirit pushed it in” (Miller II, 74).
