Women in medieval times were expected to submit to their husbands and had a certain expectation of beauty to live up to. Alice in the Wife of Bath’s Tale, is a very spirited woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind which is unlike many other pilgrims mentioned in the story. In the Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer, the character Alice stands out against the normal because she is controlling of her husbands, doesn’t care about other’s opinions, and follows her own path. The Wife of Bath is known for her many marriages, but she greatly differs from other characters because of the power she holds in her relationships. She tricks her husbands into thinking that they are enchanting her and ultimately ends up making choices for herself. The standard of beauty for women requires them to always be charming and dress a certain way. Her husband reflects, “Ye women shall apparel yourselves in garments made with chastity and shame,” he said, “and not with tressed hair and splendid gems and pearls, nor with gold, nor rich clothes.” (NeCastro 274). He frowns upon the women who act with shame and disobey their husbands, but the Wife responds that she simply doesn’t care what his opinion is. Alice “knew the tricks of the trade” and that allows her to present herself differently than other characters. Although the Wife of Bath is pretty and uses seduction to get her way, she has much more substance to her than other women. For example, she is a great cloth maker, “Of cloth-making she hadde swich an haunt. She passed hem of Ypres and Gaunt” (Chaucer lines 449-450). Even though making cloth was a normal skill for women, Alice stood out with her exceptional skill and her interests outside of the home.
