Atticus Finch is widely regarded as one of the most influential characters in modern literature. His pivotal role in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee exemplifies this influence and demonstrates his positive effect on his children, Jem and Scout. Throughout the novel, Atticus leads by example and provides lessons and teachings for his children to follow. His wisdom proves to be an instrumental part in the maturation and development of his children, and helps them to grow, learn, and adapt to the changing world around them. Atticus Finch teaches his children important lessons by forcing Jem read to Mrs. Dubose, remaining pacifistic, and defending Tom Robinson; therefore, he is a beneficial father and role model for his children.

Atticus is a respectable gentleman in society and a role model for his children. Throughout the book we see evidence of his honorable intentions, though he doesn’t seem to reap the rewards. He is morally upstanding, even-keeled, and daring. Because of these things, Atticus is a man who deserves great respect and admiration.

I believe Atticus is a good father because he saved scout from a rabid dog. He is providing a good stable foundation for his children, at least he's trying to. He disciplines them and tries to keep them out of trouble.

In short, Atticus Finch was a decent human being in a time when they were few and far between. He was unique in the way he taught his kids, the way he treated people, and the way he practiced law. Although he is criticized and mocked by many characters in the novel for his tolerant attitude towards the ‘Negros’, people of Maycomb still respect him and keep re-electing him to be their representative in the State Legislator. According to Miss Maudie Atkinson words to Scout, Atticus is a man who does for other people the unpleasant things they have to do. He is a defender of justice and he fights for it even if he is sure that he will be beaten at the end. He also tries throughout the novel to pass these values onto his children.

Atticus is middle aged and has graying black hair, when he talks to people he treats them with lots of respect no matter what that person's race, age or background is like. Starting off with Atticus Finch, I think he was one of the nicest characters in the book. He acted the same at work and at home. He did not judge people, and he did not like to harm people. When he was chosen to be Tom’s lawyer, he said to Scout “...every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.” (Page 101). He represents a mockingbird because all he did was defend a black person in court, and received hate for it.

In the midst of this, the people of Maycomb sometimes seem grateful to Atticus for his willingness to carry that weight, whereas others seem unappreciative.

Many people don't possess intelligence or fairness or aren't even low key. He was very tolerant. This taught Scout and Jem Finch to also be tolerant. In the novel, Scout learns to be patient with people and see things through their point of view. She also learns that all people aren't good. She comes of age while her father defends a black man named Tom Robinson. He was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, the daughter of Bob Ewell. Although everyone was very upset about the case, Atticus stayed low key and calm. Atticus Finch is a low key, fair, and intelligent man.

Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird possesses many admirable characters, but one shines above the rest. Atticus Finch is portrayed in the story as nearly the perfect father. Atticus not only pours his heart and soul into his career as an honest lawyer, but he also displays commendable traits as a father. Throughout the story he treats his children with respect; almost as if they were mature adults. He never simplifies his speech just because he is speaking to children.

Throughout the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, although Atticus Finch appears to be a loving and caring father, he proves himself to be more of a friend through the eyes of his children. The author, Harper lee, created Atticus to be a loyal friend to Jem Finch and Scout Finch. Atticus has potential to be a friend to his children because, first of all, the children call him by his first name. Secondly, he seldom scolds his children. Atticus has little or no rules set for his children to abide by. Lastly he does not try to mold his off springs into something they are not, though he does supply them with good advice.

Atticus is a great parent. He does many things that make him a great parent such as, being respectful, giving great advice, and he is very caring. To begin with, Atticus does not expect the respect of his children but earns it, this is shown many times, but the best example is when he tells Scout “We’ll go on reading as we always have.” (pg.41) he is showing he respects Scout because he believes she is smart enough to read and agrees more with Scout than her teacher. Secondly, he gives them great advice, when Scout is upset about her teacher telling her not to read, Atticus tells her that she will get along with people better if she can climb into their skin and walk around in it. He makes her understand what is happening in her life and resolves her issue. Lastly, Atticus is very caring.
