Who is Edgar Allan Poe, truly? Edgar Allan Poe, a man known for his riveting thrillers, a sense of dread lurking in every book he has written, the ink staring up with a delicate eeriness and the pages full of trapped nightmares. Edgar Allan Poe is a man that many imagine to loom in decrepit graveyards, own neglected manors with an overwhelming dead aura about them, and speak to crows whose squawk forces a chill to run down your spine. Many hear of him, a shiver immediately crawling down their bony back at the thought of such a poet, however they never have thought of where he truly came from, nor do they envision his past. The heartbroken Poe’s last few months in the Poe mansion were punctuated with increasing hostility towards Allan until Poe finally stormed out of the home in a quixotic quest to become a great poet and to find adventure. He accomplished the first objective by publishing his first book Tamerlane when he was only eighteen, and to achieve the second goal he enlisted in the United States Army. Two years later he heard that Frances Allan, the only mother he had ever known, was dying of tuberculosis and wanted to see him before she died. By the time Poe returned to Richmond she had already been buried. Poe and Allan briefly reconciled, and Allan helped Poe gain an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point”(Poe Museum). Now it seemed as though things had settled, Poe publishing another volume of poetry before leaving for West Point. While there however, Poe was offended to hear that his adoptive father had remarried without informing him of such an act, nor did he invite Poe to the ceremony. Poe wrote to Allan soon after, detailing all the wrongs Allan had ever committed against him and threatened to get himself expelled from the academy. He dealt with the death of his family from a single disease with open eyes. He watched his dear wife pass away as he struggled to gain a living. He fought vainly with his adoptive father of what he truly wanted to be rather than a businessman, and accepted sadly when his father left him out of his will. Poe expressed his fragile emotions through literature, delicately showing the world who he truly was. He is known for his works, and for also being an eerie individual.
