7. Plot: In the beginning of the story we are introduced to a character named Matt that has been harvested from a cow. At first he was merely a few drops of cells which came to life but then he becomes what is known as a clone. Clones are considered something not human because they all become brain dead and can’t function normally like humans can. Matt is the only clone that has a normal functioning body and mind. Matt is a clone that has been living with a mother-like figure named Celia. Celia goes to work while Matt stays in his home and is instructed not to speak or interact with anyone. One day a couple of kids come to the window in his house while Celia is away at work and they want to play with Matt. Matt is overjoyed by the attention …show more content…
The childrens’ father finds out that Matt is a clone and all the people in the house immediately treat him with disgust. Matt gets put into a room and every day Rosa comes and checks on him. Every day that passes gets worse and the doctor stops seeing Matt. Each day Rosa takes something from the room away that Matt needs. Eventually all he is left with is merely just litter shavings. Celia finally is reunited with Matt when she sees him suffering in his cell. El Patron, the most powerful person living in the mansion finds out about the treatment of Matt by Rosa and he punishes Rosa by turning her into an eejit. From this point forward El Patron treats Matt as if he is a luxurious prince and orders everyone to pay him respect. The reason he acts this way is because Matt is actually the clone of El Patron. Matt goes through the next period of his life living in the mansion along with many people and his body guard, Tam Lin and his fate of learning to live as a clone. Soon after a period of time, El Patron becomes extremely ill and Matt finally finds out that he is one of many of El Patron’s clones that are to be used for his
First, Matt grows up by accepting his identity. In this book Matt faces a bunch of problems that have to deal with him being a clone. Everybody besides a select few, discriminate against him for
Mattie’s friend Pollie died of a fever. Soon Mattie’s mother became ill forcing Mattie and her grandfather to leave town so they don't get sick. When leaving town they were suspected of having the fever, so they were dropped off on the side of the road. While walking home Mattie became ill and fainted, waking up in the hospital. She recovered and returned home, finding her mother missing. That night robbers broke into Mattie’s home, killing her grandfather. Now alone, Mattie set off to find food. She finds an orphaned girl named Nell and meets up with her old friend, Eliza, who welcomes the girls into her home. Eliza’s nephews and Nell become gravely ill. The children get better and Mattie and Eliza re-open the family-run coffee shop.
follows the life of a boy named Matt Alacrán throughout the first fourteen years of his life. In the country Opium during a futuristic time period, Matt lives with his “mom like figure” named Celia, who is actually a caretaker and housekeeper at the residence of El Patron. El Patrón is a very wealthy man who is 148 years old. He manages to live for so long due to his production of eejits, which are clones that he relies on for transplants. With his need to live, Matt is created as a clone. The everyday circumstances that everyone else face, become magnified to a much greater extent for Matt since he’s a clone. Since Matt is technically El Patrons life, he gets special, precautious treatment. This special treatment vanishes when Celia and Matt ally their forces to cease the transferring of organs between Matt and El Patron. El Patron died and Tam Lin, the bodyguard of Matt, was ordered to kill Matt. Since they were close, Tam Lin helped Matt escape to quickly get across the border. Matt just makes it across the border but is put into a home with other orphans. There he makes friends with three boys named Chacho, Fidelto, and Ton-Ton who are partners in his escape. When they finally escape from the boneyard, Matt reunites with Celia to be told that he is not a clone anymore, but a human that is now the owner of Opium.
The solution is that El Patron dies and now Matt takes his place and is considered a real human. At the end of the story, Matt is the new “Lord of Opium.” Celia is a very caring character in the story. There are three examples of this. First, she cared for Matt by letting him live in her house.
At first Matt had no idea how to get in, until Ezperanza explained, “You can’t have two versions of the same person at the same time. … But when the original dies the copy takes its place.” (Farmer 367). Ezperanza was saying how Matt was El Parton and due to his DNA being identical to El Parton he could get in. Maria then asked, “Matt’s human?” and Ezperanza answered, “He always was.” (Farmer 367). Matt was never not human, instead he was a copy of someone, like a twin. Once Matt finally understood that he was human the whole time, he started to believe in himself much more. This made him confident, and made him realize that only he was capable of going in there due to his relation to El Patron, which means that he is the only one who able to put a stop to this insanity.
We first see that happiness only exists when there’s acceptance when Celia treats Matt like he is her son. Celia makes sure that Matt isn’t to be seen by anyone, she accepts him for who he wants to be, and she accepts him for what he looks like. To begin with, Celia leaves early in the morning to work at the “big house”, the Alacran house. Matt never wants Celia to leave because he is all alone in a tiny house from sun up to sundown if not later. For example, on page 6 in Celia’s voice it says, “ ‘You must stay hidden in the nest like a good little mouse. There’re hawks out there that eat little mice.’ ” Matt is very young in the beginning of the book, so he doesn’t know he is a clone. Celia cares for him in a small house in the poppy fields that can’t be seen by the people in the big house. Celia accepts the fact that Matt is El Patron’s clone. If the Alacran family finds out that Matt is living in that little house, they will take him and treat him
The story takes place in the future where cloning is no longer illegal and Matt is escaping from El Patron after he figures out that El patron wants to use his organs
The solution in the end of the story turns out to be that El Patron dies, which make Matt the only El Patron because, when the clone’s real person dies the clone takes their place. But they didn’t know this until later. So, Matt takes El Patron’s place and becomes the ruler of Opium. I believe that the Keepers are all terrible people and want lots of power so they will lie and deceive you. They will be very kind & thoughtful but they really only care for/ about themselfs.
This can be seen when El Patrón keeps Matt like a normal boy so he can experience his youth through Matt. He thinks nothing of it when the decision was made, but El Patrón broke one of the only laws regarding clones. When a clone is born it is injected with something to make it go brain dead so it can be treated like an animal and with nobody to love it, can be used as a living set of spare parts. This is because clones have the same strengths and weaknesses as the person they are a clone of, they can use this to their advantage, as Matt did. Matt knew that el patron was greedy and thought he deserves the lives his siblings lost. Matt pieced together the clues he discovered and found why he was alive, the real reason, not the disguise. With the help of the people who loved him, which he would never have had if he was brain dead, he managed to escape, leaving El Patron to
You thought clones were not real, well think again. Matt is a clone of the most powerful ruler in opium drug country. The theme we chose for this book “House of the Scorpion” by Nancy Farmer is that the people who truly love you will risk everything for you. The first reason is that Celia loves Matt and takes major risks for him. The second reason is the love Maria shows for Matt.
All throughout the book, Matt is constantly reminded that he is lacking a soul and in other cases, an identity of his own. In the eyes of the people of Atzlán, Matt is nothing. He is just another one of El Patrón’s clones to them; that he would be nothing without El Patrón. We can recognize that once El Patrón dies, Matt opens up and really becomes his own self; one nothing like his ruthless dictator. Reading this book, there are never any ambiguities about Matt’s humanity; he is always magnanimous and loving towards his close family and friends; especially Maria. The words, “inferior,” and, “filthy lie,” take Matt by surprise. It is clear that Matt has been pegged as inferior his whole life, and to now be told that that has been a lie this whole time, would be enough to leave anyone in bewilderment. As the book wraps up, Matt is left with an identity of his own, one he creates by making his own
In The House of the Scorpion, Nancy Farmer states, "No one can tell the difference between a clone and a human. That's because there isn't any difference. The idea of clones being inferior is a lie." Members of the Alacrán household try to choose Matt's destiny before he is created and impose false allegations on him throughout his life. The belief that Matt is dangerous, a useless clone, and will become like El Patrón leaves him no room to create an identity of his own. In the House of the Scorpion, Matteo Alacrán is faced with the internal conflict of what his real identity is and the author interprets that he does not have his destiny chosen for him but he becomes his own person through his experiences.
She filled his prison with sawdust, she didn’t want to clean up after him anymore, made him live in a human chicken coop. Over time, Matt learned that he was always treated poorly by people simply because he was a clone. These experiences have a significant impact on Matt and makes him feel sympathy for clones and eejits. “He would dig up the poppy fields and put in normal crops. Once the eejits were cured, Matt would give them the choice of returning home or of working for him.
Matt is a middle class man who becomes obsessed with the need to get revenge on his son’s death. His son Frank is killed by a man named Richard. He is the husband and dads father of the women his son is in love with. This is what leads Matt into killing someone he wants pay back for his son death. Matt kills because he loves.
Others saw El Patron as a crazy, power-hungry, senile old man. Matt saw himself. Maybe this was just because he was a clone, maybe it was because he was ignorant to the extent of El Patrons evil, but Matt was faithful anyway. In this case, Matt's ignorance brought him bliss, it gave him someone to look up to and revere. Unfortunately, this dreamy ignorance blinded Matt to the true danger. Matt wanted to believe El Patron was good, because if El Patron could be good, so could Matt. All this longing blinded Matt and almost made him miss his chance to escape. Although wisdom was not the easy, enjoyable choice in this situation, it would've kept Matt a great deal safer.
