In the year 1980, there was a lot of inflation and unemployment as well as the issue in Iran where extremist Muslims took more than fifty Americans as captives. As a result, the picture portrayed Jimmy Carter as an insecure candidate for president. Ronald Reagan, on the other hand, encouraged the American people to have hope and that our nation was a set example for others. He easily defeated Carter with a whopping 44 million votes and 489 electoral votes to 35.5 million votes and 44 electoral votes. His election to the presidency seemed to be a fresh new start for the U.S.; Reagan invigorated the national defense, cut taxes, and impede the expansion of the government. During his first term, there was the development of weapons and the military in the nation as well as the continuation of the Cold War. In Ronald Reagan’s second term, he created an accord with Mikhail Gorbachev, the head of the USSR. Both nations signed a compromise to eradicate intermediate-range nuclear missiles in 1987 and then the tearing of the Berlin Wall was encouraged.
That same year, Reagan gave a speech at the Berlin Wall, demanding that it be tore

Other Arab nations, such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, asked the U.S. and similar Western countries. He disregarded the UN’s requests to pull back from Kuwait. The war started along with Operation Desert Storm, led by the U.S. 28 other countries also joined to fight Iraq in the war, including Britain, France, and Germany. At the end of the war in 1991, Iraq had been defeated but it had suffered much damage along with Kuwait. Saddam Hussein was not even removed from power so he still continued to rule. In 1992, Bill Clinton was elected as president and his terms in office brought many positive changes. There was less unemployment, less crime, and a budget surplus; however it was all overlooked when Monica Lewinsky showed
One major reason Ronald Reagan was able to defeat Carter in the election of 1980 was because Carter failed to rescue the hostages from the American embassy, prior to the election. He had already run for president in 1968 and in 1976, but didn’t win until 1980 as a Republican nominee because he established himself as the conservative candidate with the support of like-minded organizations such as the American Conservative Union. Reagan had several policies to try to recover the economy, one of them being deregulation, in which he advocated limiting government involvement in business. Following this policy, he deregulated several industries from government control. Another policy was to reduce inflation by controlling the growth of the money
Ronald Wilson Reagan took office on January 20th, 1981. Reagan served from 1981 to 1989. He served two terms and was president from 1981- 1989. President Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in the 1980 election and Walter Mondale in the 1984 election. He ran his first campaign mostly on President Carter 's shortcomings and failures. His campaign slogan was," Are you better off than you were four years ago?" His other slogan was," Lets make America great again." This clearly shows that his campaign strategy was mostly based on how America took a turn for the worst during Carter 's first term. He talked about how Carter dealt with the Iranian Hostage Crisis so poorly, which led to national embarrassment. Reagan promised an economic revival that
The country was going in vast destruction, unemployment in the country was rising, there was gas problems and high expansion. At that time Carter appeared to be unsuccessful and voters felt that he is not the right person to whom they voted and supported and were worried. Ronald Reagan turned out to be the helping hand at that time and asked the Americans to have confidence on themselves. He builds different kind of strategies and helped to solve the problems. So, this are the reasons for Ronald’s Reagan
The 20th century consisted of many difficult and controversial foreign policy decisions. From President Jimmy Carter, elected in 1977, to President Ronald Regan elected in 1981. Carter attempted at peacemaking efforts to help bring stability to the Middle East, but faced the challenge of the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979. He shaped his foreign policy through integrity, morality, and honest, to bring trust in the government to the American citizens as the previous president, Richard Nixon made the people lost their trust in the government. Ronald Regan supported a conservative foreign policy and greatly increased military spending, putting the United States in huge deficit. Ronald Regan is also given credit for the end of the Cold War, and
Before it was separating the communism in Germany. In Document H people are taking the wall down. Also the physical barrier is also gone. In Document C it says that “the Soviets themselves may, in a limited way, be coming to understand the importance of freedom. We hear much from Moscow about new policy of reform and openness. Some political prisoners have been released. Certain foreign new broadcasts are no longer being jammed. Some economic enterprises have been permitted to operate with greater freedom from state control.” Ronald Reagan basically said to Gorbachev, take down this wall if you really believe in peace between
There were two famous speeches given at the Berlin wall about freedom, taking down the wall, and bringing East and West Berlin together once again. One of these speeches was president John F. Kennedy's "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech. It was given June 26, 1963. The other speech was Ronald Reagan's address from the Brandenburg Gate. This was given later on June 12, 1987. Reagan's speech was more effect than Kennedy's because it had many good points that Kennedy didn't have, spoke to the Berliners, and Kennedy's speech wasn't enough. It didn't do anything since it was at the beginning of the Cold War. Nobody wanted to listen to Kennedy. They did not tear down the wall. After Reagan's speech they did.
The end of the 70’s was a very troubling time in the United States. There were a multitude of domestic and international problems that troubled Americans. The Iranian Hostage crisis had gone on for over a year now. Hotspots of conflict were popping up all over Africa and Asia, while trouble with the Soviets was tensing up. Domestically the United States had to deal with a declining economy characterized by high unemployment, inflation, and an energy crisis. Many people blamed all of this on Jimmy Carter. Democratic candidate and winner of the 1976 presidential election, Carter was always seen as a modest, calm, and well-intentioned leader. Critics looked at this as being weak and wanted change. The 1980 election finished with Republican Governor Ronald Regan winning a decisive victory. What did Ronald Regan do so well to blow the Democrats out of the White House and later Congress? Public image and rhetoric based political advertising helped this ex-Hollywood star to the most powerful seat in the nation. To further look into the success of the
After running and being elected president in 1981, Reagan became a popular president. Domestically, Reagan cut taxes and increased defense spending. Yet, what he did to contribute to the next phase was the most significant. Reagan negotiated a nuclear arms reduction agreement with the Soviets and is credited with helping to bring the end to the Cold War by limiting the Soviet natural gas exports which denied the Soviet Union currency, exploiting Soviet economic difficulties, and more.
In Reagan’s second term, he had a diplomatic relationship with the reform- minded Mikhail Gorbachev, the new leader of the soviet union in 1985. In 1987, they signed an agreement to eliminate intermediate range nuclear missiles. The same year Reagan spoke at the Berlin wall, a symbol of communism, and challenged Gorbachev to remove the wall. Gorbachev allowed the people of berlin to dismantle the wall Twenty-nine months later.
During the election of 1980 most Americans eyes were fixed on two presidents. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Most Americans hearts were fixed on one issue. The Iranian hostage crisis. Jimmy Carter, the current president, had tried without success to end the crisis diplomatically. Ronald Reagan, an actor turned politician, had very little experience in a political position. Carter was not fit to handle the current crisis. His attempts to free the hostages had gone poorly both diplomatically and through use of force. Ronald Reagan was not very well known as a politician, he was known as an actor and many people believed that he would just act in office instead of being the
On June 12, 1987 the then president of the United States Ronald Reagan delivered his speech known as “Tear Down This Wall”, on his second visit to the berlin at the Brandenburg gate. His speech was addressing for the Soviet Union general Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev to destory the wall that divided east from West Germany.
Some may say, President Ronald Reagan was defined by his foreign policy. Some may also consider that he made difficult decisions during his presidency in America. Unfortunately, he also made many mistakes as a president. Some think that his foreign policy is one of the errors that he made. Even though he was an important factor in ending the Cold War, people on his foreign policy team ended up killing American soldiers. Historically, many considered that a person either liked Reagan or they were against him. Reagan 's stance on foreign policy was for everyone to be at peace through America’s strength.
Ronald Reagan advocated for the removal of the Berlin wall, as best portrayed when he famously said on June 12th, 1987, in his speech before the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin Germany, “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” President Reagan strove to bring freedom to all people, not just to his own. He strove to abolish big government systems like communism and bring justice to ordinary citizens. Along with President Reagan’s efforts, statements Gorbachev made and the East Berliners rioting in protest of their government contributed to the fall of the wall. Still, the fall of the wall shocked the world. On November 9th, 1989, the government of East Germany declared that the wall would be open. At first, people of East Berlin could not believe the news, but after the truth settled the people rushed to the other side. Some five hundred people crossed before the Berliners began tearing the wall down to be reunited with West Germany. Meanwhile, America watched the event on television, celebrating the freeing of a repressed people and the dissolving of a totalitarian system. Though the fall of the Berlin wall did not affect the majority of the American population on a personal level, optimism for the future surged. After forty-four years of Cold War, the
On June 12, 1987 President Ronald Reagan gave his speech “Tear Down this Wall,” in Brandenburg Gate West Berlin Reagan begins by discussing the purpose of the Berlin Wall and how the Communists in August of 1961 built it to keep the Germans from escaping Communist-dominated East Berlin into Democratic West Berlin, that this wall was more than just a wall; it was a stark symbol of decades of a Cold War between the United States and Soviet Russia only to stop short of actual warfare. By giving this speech Reagan had intended to rally the people of West Berlin so the people would accept the western democracy and oppose the Berlin Wall. Due to Reagan being president the words he said had so much impact, he was able to use these appeals towards the German people and provide a very convincing argument.
President Ronald Reagan, the man who is accredited with ended the forty six year cold war was elected on Nov. 4, 1980. Reagan won his election with fifty percent of the popular vote over former President Jimmy Carter who had forty one percent. While Reagan as a president is praised for such successes as strengthening the national defense, stimulating growth in the U.S. economically, and as mentioned before he is considered the President who ended the Cold War. President Reagan had achieved many things by the end of his administration, but just as he had many successes his presidency was plagued with shortcomings and a handful of what could be considered flat out failures. The purpose of this writing is to establish and identify the ‘cons’ or failures of the Reagan administration, and provide a brief description of each different aspect of the administration.
