It is evident that during 1939 - 1945 World War II and the horrors associated with it, had much to do with German Powers deporting and killing entire populations, political bodies, and social groups. Among this segregated fraction of society were the Jewish people. Mark Raphael Bakers historical memoir ‘The Fiftieth Gate,’ is an amalgamation of multiple voices and text types which coalesce to articulate an extensively coherent account of Jewish oppression throughout World War II. Through the utilisation of present, past, authentic and imaginative voices, along with historical, political, archival, statistical and fictional text types, Baker engendered a literary masterpiece which transcends the means by which factual accounts are told, and in doing so, intimately explored his beloved family’s history and their past events that in some way shaped his own life. This notion that narratives are puissant to the extent of influencing the nature, perception, and expression of mankind is explored in Baker’s theme of Survival in ‘The Fiftieth Gate.’ Baker inaugurates his purpose by uniting literature with multiple voices in order to forge a connection between the reader and the past events of his elderly Jewish parents’ life.
