As is the case with most stories, the complex character in The Martian is also the main character, Mark Watney. A complex character is a character that changes throughout whatever story is being told, whether it be their personality, their appearance, et cetera. Authors develop complex characters to make them more realistic - most people in the real world are complex. No one stays the same for their entire life. Mark Watney is the complex character in The Martian because he has to be to survive. That’s just one of his many astounding traits.
It’s not obvious at first that Watney is a complex character. While he is constantly adapting to his challenges, his personality and outlook on the situation remain fairly consistent throughout the book. Watney is always running into a new obstacle he must overcome and while he takes them all in stride, he must use his mind to create a solution for everything that comes his way. The theme of The Martian is that humanity will do anything to survive. Watney embodies this theme as he spends the entire book attempting to live through the disaster of being left alone on Mars for years.

He has a dry sense of humor and a positive, yet realistic outlook on his situation. He makes do with what he’s got and doesn’t complain. Things couldn’t get much worse for anyone, and yet, he still manages to get up every day and do what he needs to do to live. That ties in with the theme of humanity and survival. It’s a basic instinct for living things to want and try to survive in dangerous
Throughout the beginning, he is faced with overwhelming problems, discrimination against himself and his family and also poverty. He was a shy kid who wasn’t defensive, until he got ganged up on and beaten down. Ever since that day passed he wasn’t the same he fought back and learned how to kick some ass and defend himself from others who tried to test his gangster and not. After that, no one wanted
The choices he and the people around him make affect his fate. They are what makes him who he is. They both

his life and the events leading up to his isolation from society and, eventually, his death. He’s a
His story really affected me to have many emotions throughout his story because there were sad times and good times. I thought it was really depressing when he was walking back to the ghetto and his mom and sister were killed when the muggers shot them. It was good though before all that when he had his family and life was good with his fur business.
I really love this book for several reasons. He then needs to find a way to survive almost 4 years on Mars with little to no supplies to survive with.
mind to think negatively. He tries to see the good in every situation no matter how bad it is. Eric
He started out in the hospital as the quiet one who never talked some even thought he was deaf, but when McMurphy started to do his work on him you realized he was more of the Depersonalized one out of the group. He was laid back the loose individual he didn’t worry about much he went with whatever McMurphy wanted him to do and in the end busted himself out of there, and set McMurphy free.
He also tried out for the cross-country team even though he though he thought he would not be good, but he ended up being the teams best runner. He said, “Could it be because I was running away from two rats that were trying to eat me.” (Page 184). He also went to the train station to pick up his sister this shows that he is willing to do things for others even though they were mean to him.
He is not afraid to be different and to be his own individual. Society should take his examples and turn them in to their own individual story. To be unique is the best
He gives us ( readers) a visual about how his life is, how he controls it, what he does and how he does it. He escapes the real world by having these active imaginations, things that would make him feel better about himself. He drops out of his School “ Elkton Hills “ because he says he’s surrounded by phonies and he hated it, this occured between the end of fall. He wants to kill time by wandering around the city before he goes home to his parents and tell them that he has been dropped out which he knows they’re going to freak out when he tells them the news. While he’s exploring, he tries to make new friends even though he thinks everybody is a phony, but always has bad luck with that, they seem like they don’t want to talk to him, so he always gets left alone.
-What he tries to do and how he responds to events and situations (create order, lead the others, get rescued) - how this helps him grow up learn responsibility (positive)
The other characteristic he exhibits is personal fable. He feels that his life is destined for something bigger than what has been set out for him. He believes there is something unique about himself that he needs to share with the world. While his father and everyone else, including his friends, look down on this idea of breaking out of the mold he still stuck with his idea of becoming something bigger and better. At the end of the story he does in fact become the town hero and his dreams of greatness come to fruition as he grows
He is frequently shown to be a bit cynical and generally just exhausted. “It kills me sometimes, how people die.” (p. 464). Though sometimes he can be a bit humorous when narrating, it always has an undertone
He is intelligent, clever and an excellent speaker. Like the tagline of the movie, he frequently makes an “offer he can’t refuse”. Another trait is his ability to read people, especially during Bonasera’s plea to the don. He is also a ruthless person, if he cannot deal with words, guns and bullets will. Even with his supposed evil, he is seen as many as a very loving father and many people love him. He was clearly hurt when he found out Michael gunned down Sollozo and McClusckey, indicating he loved Michael that he didn’t want his son to be part of any crime. He is able to separate blood and water, and embrace them both, evident when he adopted and raised Tom Hagen like he was a son. He also show a deep sense of morality, not agreeing to the dawning drug business at first, and when he did agree, he proposed that it should never be sold to kids and near schools. Near the end of his life, he became more relaxed and was able to enjoy his remaining
