President George H. W. Bush served as the forty-first president of the United States from January 20, 1989 to January 20, 1993. During his presidency, the United States was still working to overcome its defeat in the Vietnam War. Two years into his presidency, peace was threatened in the Middle East when the oppressive dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, took over the small nation of Kuwait in attempts to have access to a supply of oil. President George H. W. Bush responded to this threat with military force. The conflict was extremely short, ending in approximately six weeks, with a United States victory. Although the United States involvement was originally believed that the president’s military response was to support the nation of Kuwait, …show more content…
President George H. W. Bush approached Congress, asking for the authority to send United States troops to Iraq, to liberate the people of Kuwait from Iraqi control. The United States then launched an air war against Iraq in mid-January 1991. Despite the media telling American citizens that the United States took an involved role in the conflict in the Middle East to free Kuwait and end Saddam Hussein’s oppressive dictatorship, depicting him as another Hitler, this was false. President George H. W. Bush approached Congress for permission to send troops solely to make up for the United States defeat in the Vietnam War and prove that the United States was a world superpower. The United States’ actions consisted of primarily bombing Iraqi cities such as Baghdad. Many were killed during these raids, including children. Towards the end of the war, approximately six weeks after it began, the United States attacked Iraq using both a ground assault and air raids. As with the air raids, the ground troops encountered hardily any resistance. After the war, the United States left Saddam Hussein in power, which goes against what the media originally said the reason for United States military action was. President George H. W. Bush commented at the end of Operation Desert Storm that the United States victory in brought redemption to the United States after the defeat in
“Early on the morning of January 17, 1991, a massive U.S.-led air offensive hit Iraq’s air defenses, moving swiftly on to its communications networks, weapons plants, oil refineries and more. The coalition effort, known as Operation Desert Storm, benefited from the latest military technology, including Stealth bombers, Cruise missiles, so-called “Smart” bombs with laser-guidance systems and infrared night-bombing equipment” (“Persian Gulf War - Facts & Summary”). The goal here was to win the war in the air in order to reduce combat on the ground as much as possible. “By mid-February, the coalition forces had shifted the focus of their air attacks toward Iraqi ground forces in Kuwait and southern Iraq. A massive allied ground offensive, Operation Desert Sabre, was launched on February 24, with troops heading from northeastern Saudi Arabia into Kuwait and southern Iraq. Over the next four days, coalition forces encircled and defeated the Iraqis and liberated Kuwait” (“Persian Gulf War - Facts & Summary”). Bush declared a ceasefire on February 28, ending the Persian Gulf War. According to the peace terms, Iraq would recognize Kuwait’s sovereignty and get rid of all of it’s weapons of mass
Other Arab nations, such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, asked the U.S. and similar Western countries. He disregarded the UN’s requests to pull back from Kuwait. The war started along with Operation Desert Storm, led by the U.S. 28 other countries also joined to fight Iraq in the war, including Britain, France, and Germany. At the end of the war in 1991, Iraq had been defeated but it had suffered much damage along with Kuwait. Saddam Hussein was not even removed from power so he still continued to rule. In 1992, Bill Clinton was elected as president and his terms in office brought many positive changes. There was less unemployment, less crime, and a budget surplus; however it was all overlooked when Monica Lewinsky showed
As for the allegations of a personal war, in 1993, President William Clinton and US Central Intelligence Agency officers discovered a plan “directed and pursued by the Iraqi Intelligence Service” to assassinate George Herbert Walker Bush, who served as President of the United States from January, 1989 to January, 1993 (Von
During the 1990’s, the US was involved in two important events, Clinton's impeachment threat and the Persian Gulf War. In 1999, President Bill Clinton was accused of perjury by a grand jury due to his obstruction of justice. Lying under oath, Clinton claimed he did not have relations with unpaid intern Monica Lewinsky. During a four-hour closed testimony, Clinton spoke live via closed circuit to a grand jury in a closed courthouse. Clinton faced many consequences. Eventually, he was acquitted by the U.S. Senate, according to the website: This Day in History, December 19. In addition, from 1990-91, the Persian Gulf War had occurred. Many other countries contributed to the start of this war. Different countries were taking Iraq’s oil supply.
After 9/11 president George W. Bush had responded and issued a “War on terror”. First, he accused Afghanistan and Iraq on supporting the al-Qaeda terrorist group. Then he invaded both countries and replaced their government. The war strategies the used against Iraq was a complex setup U.S troops were lined up against the iraq border with the help of the british, poland, and australia. They were sent to fight a war that lasted 21 days that consisted of 135,00 troops. The U.S fought that war and won it.
The gulf war began in the early 1990. It began when Saddam Hussein invaded his neighbors who were rich in oil.George W. Bush was in power as the U.S president he successfully spearheaded the war. President Bush’s foreign policy team forged an international coalition that was very unpredictable. This coalition consisted of the NATO allies and countries like Saudi Arabia,Egypt and Syria (The Middle East countries). Russia also joined the United States in condemning Iraq, who was its long-term client’s state. For this reason, Russia were not able to commit its troops. In 1991, air campaign was led by the department of state. This was followed by “operation desert storm” a war that managed to expel Iraqi forces from

More than a decade ago on March 19, 2003 President George W. Bush launched an invasion to Iraq that more than nine hardship years resulting more than 4,000 dead American troopers, more than 32,000 service wounded warriors and over 100,000 dead Iraqi
The Persian War began when Iraq leader Saddam Hussein, ordered to take over Kuwait in early August 1990 due to a border dispute and allegations that Kuwait stealing Iraqi petroleum. Therefore, western forces such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt called on The United States for help. By January 1991 the allied coalition against Iraq had reached a strength of 700,000 troops (Encyclopedia Britannica). Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein refused to obey The United States order to withdraw from Kuwait so, President George H. W. Bush announced the start of Operation Desert Storm (ushistory.org); a military operation seizing Iraqi forces from Kuwait. At the end of it all in February of 1991 when Iraq was defeated The Kurds and Shīʿite went into heavy rebellion.
The Iraq War, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom, took place in 2003 and dragged on for almost nine years, until the withdrawal of US troops in December 2011. The invasion was justified by the US using the new National Security Strategy that was proposed by the Bush administration. One of the key features of the National Security strategy was the justification that the US could preemptively strike targets nations that it deemed a threat to the security of the US. In order to justify the invasion of Iraq, the governmental leaders in the US claimed that Saddam Hussein had ties to Al-Qaeda and other terror groups, as well as using Saddam’s use of chemical weapons as legitimization for the war. Once the war began on March 20, 2003, the original
On March 19, 2003, Bush ordered American and British troops to invaded Iraq (Schultz, 2003, p. 524). They continue marching on the capital of Baghdad. Therefore, U.S. forces rooted Hussein out of a dirt hole in December 2003, later he was hunged, by his Iraqi enemies. The American military tried for eight years to create a democracy in Iraq. After ten more years of violent attacks, President Bush declared victory in 2003. Nevertheless, the attacks had caused nearly ten times more Americans died in Iraq.
The United States has been at war since its creation in 1776. Notably, one of the most crucial wars was the War on Terror. Beginning in March of 2003, this war initially served the purpose of getting rid of the country 's leader Saddam Hussein to prevent his use of suspected stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. Hussein was best-known as a Middle Eastern ruler with a violent regime. He governed Iraq from 1979 until his capture in 2003when President Bush presumed he was harboring chemical weapons such as synthetic warheads, shells, or aviation bombs. While politics justified invading Iraq, the conflict between the U.S. and Iraq began long before the war. In the post-election leading up to the war, political officials such as George Bush attested repeatedly that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and posed a danger to the U.S. and other targets. Bush sold the war to Americans by attesting these cases of threat to Americans openly with supreme certainty. The United States of America should not have invaded Iraq as it allowed the establishment of government power and democracy without evidence under prior resolutions, increased violence, and forced American citizens to inquire significant debt including the injuries and hardships sustained by U.S. soldiers.
The Persian Gulf War began with Saddam Hussein, the dictator of Iraq moving his forces into the neighboring country Kuwait mid-1990. During this time Iraq had the fourth largest army in the world, after being supplied by the United Sates during their eight year war with Iran raised some concerns. (Operation Desert Storm) Also with the chance of Iraq controlling one-fifth of the world’s oil supply didn’t sit well with the United States, nor its Allied forces. (Operation Desert Storm) Early August 1990 the United Nations Security Council directed Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait by 15 January 1991. (Operation Desert Storm) Towards the end of 1990 United Sates began the defense of Saudi Arabia, which known as Operation Desert Shield. Along with multilateral support, the United States sent
Over thirty years ago the Vietnam War ended, and the U.S. came back home with their tails between their legs and nothing to show for other than a high number of casualties, and a huge pile of debt. The U.S. underestimated the North Vietnamese army, and it was costly. Many believe that the Vietnam War was none of the U.S. business, but on the contrary, many believe we should have tried to stop the spread of communism. The long-lasting Vietnam War was unnecessary for the U.S. to be a part of; it put many people through unneeded stress and hard times.
The war against Iraq began on March 20, 2002, when the U.S lunched “Operation Iraqi Freedom”. This was after President Bush called Iraq part of an “axis of evil”, also calling the country dangerous which is threatening U.S with the world’s most destructive weapons. The major phase of the war began when U.S troops marched within 50 miles of Baghdad with heavy aerial attacks on Baghdad and other cities. After the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon which was believed to be the work of Al Qaeda, U.S was concerned about the security of the Untied States which lead to the war in Iraq. Even though U.S officials felt the war in Iraq is the main priority, but many people in U.S opposes the war which brings up a lot of controversial issues.
