I strongly believe the story would have changed if it had occurred in a different setting because of the important factors, the courtyard, the library and Andy’s cell.
Firstly, the courtyard where Red does his special trading of contraband items was larger than any prison in England, as said in the book so it’s easy for him to trade due to there being enough room for him to deal and get out safely. If book were set in a different prison, Red probably would have the job he had at Shawshank, moreover Andy wouldn’t have approached Red for a Rock hammer, rock blankets and/or the countless pin-up queens posters.
Secondly, the library where Andy had worked and ran was originally a closet that storage the prison’s paint, until Andy proposed to turn it into a library, best prison library at that. If book were set in a different prison, there would probably already be a library in the prison so Andy wouldn’t have gone through the struggles and successes of creating Shawshank’s library. When Warden Norman threatened to turn the library back into the paint closet because Andy wanted a retrial due to new evidence of his case which is what the warden didn’t want to give it to him, Andy Without the library Andy would have lost motivation to go on.

If book were set in a different prison, Andy wouldn’t have the same opportunity he had at Shawshank, as stated in the book by Red “it would have taken 600 years to break through the wall with the rock hammer” hence, Andy and Red staying in prison waiting for the chance of parole. However, in Andy’s case maybe resulting in a retrial and is
After Andy was proven guilty, this is when he was introduced to Shawshank Prison. This is when Andy took the next step of his Hero’s Quest and Crossed the Threshold.
reds relationship with the guards and inmates are the only reason red has had a successful stay at shawshank. throughout shawshank red makes many deals with the guards not only improving his time at shawshank but giving him a higher status in the prison " Nine or Ten names drawn out of hat and two of them happend to be Andy's and my own" (Page 40) It can most deffinitely be inferred that red made some sort of deal with the gaurds to get the both of them on the roof top considering it was a desired job and nearly seventy other men also wanted the job. Red's relationship withthe gaurds gets him the things he wants when he wants giving him a more positive outlook on the time he is serving. Red is known as the man who can get you things arounf shawshank. Nearly everyone comes to him for anything from cigarettes to a rock hammer. He not only makes a profit off of the items he gets for people he gains a source of power within the prison. Red being the man who can get things is really what sparked the relationship between Andy and Red. " I heard your the man who knows how to get things" (Pg 27) Short but sweet some of the first words shared by andy to red. This is a major monent in the novella because this
The film “The Shawshank Redemption” directed by Frank Darabont is set in Maine. This film is about a young successful banker named Andy Dufresne who is wrongfully convicted of killing his wife and her lover and is sentenced to a double life in prison. Andy ends up becoming an inmate in Shawshank prison where he learns about the unpleasantness and brutality of prison life. Andy holds on to his dreams and his hope and along the way he befriends a couple of his fellow inmates, and one of them was a black market salesmen who has been in prison for a long time called Red. After a few years Andy finds a way to live out his sentence with as much ease as he possibly can by offering his banking knowledge and expertise to the guards and to the warden at Shawshank prison.
In the novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the reader follows the life of Andy Dufresne, who was wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and a golf pro. Author Stephen King, who is known for his simpler, conversation esque writing, describes Andy’s experiences and attempt to escape from Shawshank Prison where he is being held. Red, Andy’s most valuable friend while in prison, is also in prison for killing his wife, but in contrast to Andy, he actually did it. Andy is constantly denied his freedom for parole or when evidence arises proving his innocence because of his role running the illegal money laundering scheme for Warden Norton. Throughout the novella, both characters display moments of similar, but also at times vastly different, levels of hope. King uses the way characters, such as Red and Andy, view hope as either a means of escape or simply futile in the novella to show how the circumstances surrounding a tragedy or difficult situation change a character’s mindset on hope and in turn dictates the actions they use to cope.
At the beginning of the Shawshank Redemption, Andy gets framed for the murder of his cheating wife. Which makes his life take a darker turn with him going to Shawshank prison. Shawshank prison is one of the worst prisons ever, the prison guards abuse the prisoners, and the warden orders them to do so and will do anything for money. The prison uses fear as a way to keep the prisoners in line. When you first show up to Shawshank they take you in, strip you down, and spray you with water. After that, they throw this powder on you then give you your clothes and walk you to your cell naked. The prisoners have a game to see who breaks down first, so they yell at the new prisoners until one breaks. Their goal is to break the person they bet on this shows fear because when a new prisoners break they cry and become very scared and the one who broke in the film was murdered by a guard.
The movie, Shawshank Redemption, is about a story of two men, Andy Dufrane and Red Abbott, who spent most of their lives in a prison together going through the ups and downs of prison life. Andy, who was once a vice-president at a bank, was in prison for murdering his wife and her lover, when he caught them in bed together; he was giving life in prison. Whereas Red, also a convicted murderer, got life but with a chance of parole. The two grew close to each other because they were both very educated men and had the same interests. After five years of doing the laundry, the warden thought it would in the prisons best interest to use such an educated man as Andy in the library. So they transferred Andy from the laundry to
Freedom is such a vital theme in both the book and film because it reflects how desperately Andy was willing to sacrifice the bit of freedom he had left. It also reflects on Andy’s time spent at Shawshank and how he managed to overcome the feeling of imprisonment. Andy wants freedom more than Red. Andy escaping showed watchers his crave and sacrifice for freedom.
Andy Dufresne is knowing he is innocent of his crime and is determined to be free and live his dreams. At Shawshank State Prison, it may seem like the inmates are controlled and unable to do anything. However, Andy and the other inmates took every opportunity to make themselves feel freer. Although Andy is convicted sentenced to life in prison his self-determinism for extrinsic and intrinsic motivations are clear throughout the film. The experiences that Shawshank brings does not hinder the self-determinism that he shows. It’s always a possibility that someone could escape a prison yet no one thinks it can happen. The maximum-security prison in the film The Shawshank Redemption is no joke however through determination Andy Dufresne can accomplish it. Upon arrival to the prison Andy had to adapt to direction that his life was heading. Even though he knows of his innocence he is incapable of just walking out and has to deal with the nuisances in his way. The characters feel like freedom is something that they always look forward to, but near the end when Brooks and Red are paroled they soon realize the changes around them and can’t adapt. Nevertheless, Frank Darabont does an exceptional job of showing the emotions that the charters had to go through in this prison escape film. It seems as though the point he is trying to get
Andy Dufresne arrives at Shawshank Prison in 1947. He has been given a life sentence for murdering his wife and her lover in cold blood. After having lived a straight and narrow life as a successful banker before imprisonment, Andy maintains his innocence throughout the movie. Red describes Andy as having a quite way about him. “He strolled, like a man in a park without a care or a worry in the world.” When Andy first approaches Red, it’s to acquire a rock hammer that he can use to carve the stones in the yard to make chess pieces. Andy understands that in Shawshank, Red is the man that can get you things. Red agrees and over the next few years they become close friends.
I am Mexican, I must be a slum dweller. I am Muslim, I must be part of ISIS. I am blonde, I must be unintelligent. I am a model, I must be anorexic.
The Canterbury Tales is a series of stories that are told by a group of pilgrims who are headed to the Canterbury Cathedral. Within these series of stories, there is the pardoner and the reeve, both who shows contradictory characters. The Reeve is a very deliberate and virtuous, business guy. However, the pardoner’s appearance is recognized as a blonde haired man who is loved by everyone he encounters. Nonetheless, he is so depraved and intelligent, but he sells spurious religious things to the community. Furthermore, the pardoner tells a story that includes a great precedent of the seven deadly sins and within that story there is one sin that may affect the community in time back then and also at the present time. Greed, one out of the seven
Ancient Greek and Roman cultures have greatly influenced modern lifestyle significantly through the artistic and historical events which contributed immensely to shaping the present world. Today, many of the significant monuments and buildings constructed between the late 80’s and early 90’s were inspired mostly by the architectural designs of these ancient civilizations. The most significant architectural representations of these cultures are still being used today for special purposes and serve as tourist attractions and inspiration to both artists and non-artists alike. We compare these two magnificent structures, their style and function thereby giving us a better understanding of the similarities and differences in the lifestyles of their
A man by the name of Andy Dufresne was convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in Shawshank prison. He was an obvious black sheep among the prisoners, but as time went on he grew relationships with the crooks and realized the injustice in the justice system. In the creation of friendship between Red and Andy, hope was spread throughout the prison. While many themes are present in the film The Shawshank Redemption, hope, friendship, and injustice are also relevant in the world today.
It used to be Brooks’ own personal and private space. However, Andy converted Brooks’ old book room, into more of a public one for everyone to use. This represents the idea of a small glimpse of freedom, which is something you rarely find in prison. Andy shows again that he doesn't let prison life take complete control of him. The library soon becomes Andy’s office and it is where he does all the tax returns for the guards. The library became a place for social gathering for the prisoners as well as the guards. It acts as a turning point in the film. This is because as the library was being built by Andy, Andy was trying to abide by the rules of the prison and be a normal inmate. However, after Tommy was killed by the warden, Andy decided he had been there long enough. Andy realised in order for him to incriminate the warden and escape Shawshank, he must think like one. The key to Andy’s freedom is through books. The library is symbolized in Tommy as he is like a book himself. Tommy had the power and knowledge to set Andy free, as he could have been a witness in Andy’s retrial. The library was a source of imagination, creativity, and knowledge. For Andy, it was a place where he would produce some of his best work. The library shows the distinction between the books in the library that lead to freedom and hope, in comparison to the strict guidelines of reading and following the bible in
Moreover another production aspect used to show us this idea is music. Music is used to create mood and help us understand what a character is going through. We hear violin and string instruments as Andy arrives to Shawshank Prison. Violin and string instruments are used in movies a lot to make the viewer feel sad about something happening or about to happen. We first hear Orchestral Music when we are shown Shawshank Prison we hear it playing in the background low volume and slow tempo and this increases in volume and tempo to create a sad mood for Andy’s arrival and emphasise that the prison is a dark and depressing place to end up. It suggests to the viewer that the prison is a sad place to end up in and that it is a corrupted place too. It makes us worried for Andy who seems like a good guy.
