“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both” (Roosevelt) Forbidden love, suspense, and death are revealed in the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet. The marriage of Romeo and Juliet was planned to be the outcome, but certain people lead that to tragedy. Friar Laurence is responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Laurence is responsible for the tragic, but avoidable, death of Romeo and Juliet. He went behind the two feuding families backs and developed a plan that killed the two lovers. To enact the plan, Friar Laurence willingly gave Juliet a vial of poison that helped her fake her death,“ Take thou this vial, being then in bed,/and this distilled liquor drink thou off” (IV.I. 93) and when she would awake from her slumber Romeo was supposed to be at her side, “Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift” (IV.I. 114) but Friar Laurence didn’t get the message to Romeo in time. …show more content…
This is another reason that Friar Lawrence is to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet. If Friar Lawrence did not give Juliet the potion in the first place and just told her to marry Paris and be happy with him, then the whole mess would of not started in the first place. “Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself, Then is it likely thou wilt undertake A thing like death to chide away this shame, That copest with death himself to scape from it: And, if thou darest, I'll give thee remedy.” (IV.I.34-41) This is the scene where Friar Lawrence gave Juliet the potion to fake her death and nobody would have died and everyone would just be
In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Friar Laurence is to blame for the death of Romeo and Juliet. Friar decided to marry Romeo and Juliet, to attempt to mend the feud between their families. As the play continued, Friar Laurence had provided dangerous medicine to Juliet, leading to Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. Because of mishandling the medicine and marrying Romeo and Juliet Friar Laurence is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
In the classic play Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence plays a major part. Romeo and Juliet trusted him entirely as he was the priest of their town. They turned to the Friar for help and advice at a few crucial points in the play. Little did these two lovers know that their decision to turn to Friar Laurence for help would eventually lead to their deaths. Friar Laurence was responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he married Romeo and Juliet, he was afraid of committing a sin, and because of his faulty plan for saving Juliet from a marriage to Paris.
Now Juliet is left alone in a tomb alone knowing that her is dead. Friar Laurence also was suppose to give Romeo a letter with a plan but it never got delivered to Romeo. Friar Laurence ask Friar John “ Who bare my letter, then, to Romeo”. Friar John answered back “ I could not send it- here it is again-”. That’s another reason why Friar Laurence is at fault for Romeo and Juliet death, Never got the plan out letter to Romeo.
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is perhaps the most famous tragedy ever written. However, one can say that had it not been for a certain Friar, the two lovebirds might have made it out alive. Friar Laurence is the middleman, both friends with the Capulet and the Montague’s, many would say that Friar Laurence holds the position as peacemaker in the play. He gives advice to Romeo, he says “Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast.” unfortunately he does not follow his own advices, which could have lead to the tragic ending of the play. This essay will discuss if Friar Laurence can be regarded as responsible for the tragic ending of the two young lovers.
Friar Lawrence plays a big part in causing the death of Romeo and Juliet because he secretly marries them knowing something either negative or positive will happen. Friar even tells Romeo the cautions for he says 'Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast.' (Act II Scene III 97) Friar marries them because he thinks that the marriage is going to end the feud between the families of Romeo and Juliet. He knows that even though Romeo and Juliet are in love they will never be able to see each other. Not in a grave to lay one in, another out to have” (Act II scene III 85) Also, if Friar Lawrence did not give Juliet the potion that she was going to use to deceive her family into thinking she was dead to get out of her marriage to Paris and make Romeo aware of what was going to happen, their deaths would not have occurred. Romeo goes to the tomb thinking Juliet is really dead after Balthasar accidently informed him of Juliet’s apparent death not knowing of her plan. If he had stayed there longer without taking the poison he had obtained from Apothecary they both would not have killed themselves. He brought the poison to the tomb to end his own life next to Juliet after seeing for himself if she was really dead. Romeo did not want to live without Juliet.
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet discusses the many challenges the ‘star crossed lovers’ face. It is their own deceptive actions that ultimately lead them to their untimely end. However Romeo and Juliet are forced to be deceptive due to their fate and misfortune, the ongoing feud in Verona, and the misleading guidance they receive from others; which also contribute to their deaths. Romeo and Juliet focuses on the theme of love and hate, this theme is interweaved throughout the play.
In the play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Friar Laurence is responsible for their deaths. So many things were done wrong by Friar Laurence, that lead to their deaths. The first mistake that Friar Laurence made was to agree to marry the two in secret and without the permission of their parents. The next bad advice he gave, was when he instructed Juliet to fake her own death. The last wrong thing was giving the message for Romeo to an unreliable messenger. If any of these events did not take place, their deaths could’ve been avoided.
Juliet wanted to get out of an arranged marriage with Paris so badly, she wanted to kill herself. She was also distraught because Romeo was banned from Verona, and she can’t see him. Friar Lawrence helped her plan to fake her death, he gave her a potion to make her fall asleep for forty-two hours. “Take thou this vial, being then in bed, When presently through all thy vein shall run a cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse shall keep his native progress, but surcease; no warmth, no breath, shall testify thou livest…”(Shakespeare 818). This quote helps show that Friar was helping Juliet.
The potion was able to have Juliet fake her death for forty-two hours and place her into a catatonic state. Juliet took this potion so she could get away with not having to marry Paris. According to act 4 scene 4 and 5, the nurse was the one to find Juliet deceased in her bed and is the one to tell Juliet's parents. When Romeo caught the wind with this tragedy he discovered that he couldn’t live his life without Juliet so he ended up killing himself. Friar Lawrence was to blame for this because the potion wasn’t necessary, Juliet could have stuck up for herself and decide that she didn’t want to marry Paris now. This is the second reason why Friar Lawrence is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and
Friar Lawrence was to blame for Romeo and Juliet's death. The first reason that he was to blame is the fact that he give a 13 year old girl, who is unstable anyway, a poison to put her to sleep. In the book Friar says “When you are in bed, take his vile, a sleep induced drug will run through your veins, and your pulse will stop.” (lines 98-100) He is entrusting a 13 year old girl with a poison that can put her to sleep or worse. Also in the book Friar Lawrence says “Your body will be stiff and cold as a corpse.” (lines 282-284) He is explaining what this poison he is giving her is capable of. Friar lawrence also says “You will continue in this state for 42 hours then will awake s from a pleasant sleep.” (lines 108-110) This
“Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none"- William Shakespeare. Shakespeare explains that one should love all, however, have trust in people you love and believe in the most. To conclude, he explains that you should always promote happiness and truthfulness, whether it is in your best interest or not. Romeo and Juliet put this quote into action as they put trust into Friar Laurence to marry them. Many have debated that Friar Laurence is in fact a major reason for the death of Romeo and Juliet. The Montagues and Capulets are two noble families in the city of Verona. After years of an ongoing feud with one another, Romeo and Juliet decide that marriage is the only way to restore peace throughout the land. Through the support of Friar Laurence,
Usually, elaborate and complicated plans do not turn out the way that they are supposed to, especially in this scenario. Later in the play, Romeo is banished from Verona for killing Tybalt. Friar Lawrence tries to help the young lovers using a potion, “ a thing like death to chide away this shame, that cop’st with death himself to ‘scape from it...And if thou dearest, I’ll give thee remedy.” (183). This potion would make Juliet appear dead for 42 hours, and then she would arise. Giving an almost deadly potion to a 14-year old does not seem like a responsible measure to take. Friar thinks that when Paris sees Juliet dead, he will stop pursuing Juliet for once and Juliet will stay loyal to Romeo. Friar sends a “letter was not nice but full of charge of dear import, and neglecting it may do much danger.” (219). This letter includes the potion plot and what Friar’s intentions were. Unfortunately, Romeo never receives this letter and never gets to know that Juliet will stay loyal to Romeo,
Friar Laurence’s character flaws greatly impacted the end result of the play. The Friar should be punished for his poorly made decisions throughout Shakespeare’s story. His first mistake was when he initially helped Romeo and Juliet with the aid of the Nurse. Both Romeo and Juliet are children and their parents should be included in every decision made for them. The Friar married Romeo and Juliet in Act 3 of the play. “Till Holy Church incorporate two in one” (3.1.37) The marriage was the start of many issues. Such as Juliet’s inability to wed Paris, being a married lady. This led to Friar’s next choice of giving Juliet the sleeping potion—making her appear dead. “Take this vial, being then in bed,” (4.1.93) Giving Juliet the poison was the reason why so many characters had died in the end of Act 5 of the play. Paris had died fighting Romeo because he thought he was attempting to steal Juliet’s “dead” body. Romeo, ignorant of the fact that Juliet was not dead, killed himself. Juliet committed suicide because of her fiancé lying next to her lifeless. The poison given by Friar
Let us start with Friar Laurence because he has the most blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. He had secretly married the two star-crossed lovers at the start of the midpoint of the play. When he knows that Romeo is banished he develops a plan to bring the two back together. His plan is to put Juliet into a coma-like state, which will make her seem dead to her family. He then tells
Friar Laurence gives the letter to Friar John to deliver to Romeo in Mantua. Friar Laurence states to Juliet “Meanwhile, I’ll send a message to Romeo. He will come here, and I will be there when you awake”- Friar Laurence (Act 4, scene 1). Friar John was Irresponsible and shouldn’t have went to get another brother to help him. Friar John states to Friar Laurence “I never made it to Mantua. I went to ask another brother to go with me. He was visiting the sick when I found him, the health officers thought we were in a house infected by the plague”- Friar John (Act 5, scene 2). All and all, Friar Laurence and Friar John are the most responsible for the two lover’s deaths.
