Who Is Sofonisba Anguissola?

There were many important people during the Renaissance Period, and one of the most important was Michelangelo.

I chose to type my submission for this week on Artemisia Gentileschi. Artemisia was born in Rome in July of 1953, despite the fact that her birth certificate says she was born in 1590. I’m not sure how they managed to mess that one up but I’m sure there’s some reason. She was the oldest child and the only girl in her family after her mother died when Artemisia was just twelve. Her father was a notable painter in Tuscany by the name of Orazio Gentileschi. She was introduced to art, obviously, by her father in his workshop. Her first painting for the public was “Susanna and the Elders” when she was seventeen years, many made accusations that her father helped with the painting.

Another interesting commonality between the two is that Anguissola’s mother died when she was around 4 or 5. Similarly, Gentileschi lost her mother at a young age, when she was around 12 years old. Gentileschi must have struggled more as a result than her fortunate predecessor, as she was not from prestigious family. Her father was a fairly well-known artist who worshipped Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio’s style, especially his use of tenebrism. This adoration was imparted to his daughter Artemisia, who often copied this style. Intriguingly, there is a bizarre connection even in this. There is some rumor that a drawing that Anguissola had sent to the famed artist Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (the more famous one), had ended up in a notebook belonging to Giorgio Vasari, and is suspected to have been discovered by Caravaggio, which later inspired his painting ‘Boy Bitten by a Lizard’. There is a clear connection through time between these two women. Yet, in a way seems to have been founded through pure chance and phenomenon. Nanette Salomon, a very well known feminist writer, wrote the article, “Judging Artemisia: A Baroque Woman in Modern Art History.” The article opens up with a discussion about the 2001-2 exhibition of Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi: Father and Daughter Painters in Baroque Italy. The author explains that three things are unusual here: the fact that two famous artists were presented at the same time, that they were related as father and daughter, and the fact that the woman was better known than the man. Her intent in this article is to look at the effects of this trope (figure of speech) in the past and in the present.

When one thinks of influential Western artists, images of the works of Michelangelo or Caravaggio might be evoked. In fact, most paintings one may think of would have been completed by men. Most of the art movements in the western world were in fact lead and contributed to by men, especially in the Renaissance and Baroque period. Even though art as a profession in these time periods was dominated by male artists, female artists did, in fact, make significant contributions to their respective art movements. This paper will discuss and compare the lives and works of two Italian painters: Sofonisba Anguissola of the Renaissance period and Artemisia Gentileschi of the Baroque period.

In the early time of the Medici family when they were just building up their empire commission artists would help them to build their political prestige and their reputation in the community. Michelangelo Di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was the full name of the famous artist we all call by just his first name Michelangelo. Michelangelo was born on March 6th, 1475 in Caprese, Italy and lived with his parents and four siblings. Michelangelo's mother became sick when he was an infant and he was raised by a wet nurse. In Michelangelo's teen years he would leave school early and go to the church to watch the painted while they worked; his family started to see him as a disgrace as they didn’t see art as a profession he should join(Michelangelo). He was a very prestigious man and many young painters looked up to the man. His techniques while painting have me at a loss for words. I had little to know clue coming into this research paper about Francesco Guardi but he has now turned out to be one of my favorite painters of all time. I love the work he did for the church using multiple canvases to capture the full image. His art looks so modern and beautiful to me and when i would look up some of his art i would find myself staring at the picture on the screen. Every painting is a unique experience for each individual person, therefore two of the artists that offered some of the most unique experiences where Leonardo da vinci and Michelangelo. While both of these painters are today well regarded and remembered, during their time they both had achieved such status in vastly different ways. Therefore even though these two artists lived during the same time these two are nothing alike. With their unique take on the world and events around them they were able to shape how the average person thought about the world around them.
