Who Is The Narrator In Battle Royale

In the short story, "Battle Royale", Ralph Ellison writes about a young black men and his experiences taking part in the Battle Royale and about his relation to the white people around him, his grandfather's experiences and his race. The narrator shows a clear struggle with how to be moral, not make waves but at the same time not accept his status as a black person in the 1920s and 1930s. The narrator believes that if he is nice and calm and civil and respect the white man he is doing the right thing and everything will be alright. However, in my opinion the narrator mistakes being civil and keeping the peace with being an obedient pushover. The narrator exists in a way that his relationship with white people is not much better than being their property and by living this way even though he is safer he is also reinforcing his status as a second-class citizen in the South. …show more content…

However, during a conversation with his grandfather the narrator's perception of what is moral and what the implication of his life style is is challenged. His grandfather suggest tell him that the proper way to live is to be obdeient in the face of the white people but to have disdain for them that you keep hidden. THe grandfather's way of presenting himself as a black man is more realisitic and aware. THe grandfather believes that it is important to appear to go along with what the white people say fro safety reason but to never forget what being a black person means and to keep that feeling of hatred and disdain as to never forget that as a black person, you are considered a second-class citizen and that you do not accept that
