Coach Carter is a sports drama film based on a true story about a former record holding Richmond High School basketball player, Ken Carter, who returns to his high school to coach the current juvenile players. At the first practice of the season, Coach Carter immediately acknowledges that the players are rude and disrespectful toward their superiors and he decides to require each player to sign a written contract that states that they have to maintain certain regulations and follow many rules throughout the year, in and outside of the classroom to be able to play on the team. He feels that the players are not disciplined enough and that they would not survive life or have a successful future outside of playing basketball, so the contracts are intended to teach the team discipline, structure, and leadership skills on and off the court.
The lead protagonist, Coach Carter, faces many difficulties in this movie. However, he always

Although the basketball players signed the contracts, most of them still do not follow the rules. The students continue to show up to class late and they receive terrible grades on assignments and tests, therefore not maintaining the required minimum 2.3 grade point average. Due to these strains, Coach Carter makes the tough decision of locking the gym doors, cancelling all the games and practices, until the players bring their grades up and start showing up to study hall every day in the library. The parents of the players and the staff of the school do not agree with these rules that Coach Carter established, as well as cancelling the basketball games, so they decide to plead a case to the school board staff to reopen the gym and have Coach Carter fired. They seem to care more about the boys playing basketball and winning than they do about their education and future, causing Coach Carter to almost quit his job out of frustration and not supporting their
He is cheating the system and ultimately discouraging Marlene to be the best basketball player and student that she can be. Being a top stakeholder Dean Stafford should not grant Coach Harris’ request on the grounds of school policy procedures when dealing with academics for sports players. The policy clearly states that every player will maintain a B average or will not be eligible to continue playing until grades are on the level that the school has placed in the policy. The policy is set for a reason and should not ever be broken by anyone for no reason. As a dean, Mr. Stafford could be held accountable and also fired.
According to the film, Hickory, Indiana is a place where “basketball players are treated like gods”. The town takes basketball very seriously, it is literally a way of life for them. The Hickory Huskers may not be the best team in the area, but the community is very supportive of the team. Every week the whole town comes together for the games to cheer on the Hickory Huskers and the townspeople have meeting to try coming up with solutions to help better their performance. However, the towns approach is aggressive and their strategies to win are different from Coach Dales. For example, a group of men from the town barge into one of the team’s practices and criticize Coach Dale that they should be practicing with the ball instead of doing strength exercises. Coach Dale believed that for the team to improve he needed to
In the first place, these students get barely any education while they are playing their sports. They are constantly on the move and never in the classroom to do work or learn anything to get their grades and IQ better. These
The students spend 40 hours, per week, just practicing. This does not include games, team meetings, or weight lifting. With all the time they spend doing stuff for their sport, students do not have much time for academics. According to the NCAA, athletes are only allowed to practice for 20 hours per week, or 4 per day, however, most sports practice way more (see fig.2) (Jacobs 2015). Mark Nagel, a professor of sports and entertainment management at the University of South Carolina, exclaims that “there’s technically an off-season, but there are these voluntary workouts that most coaches say are voluntary but then expect athletes to be at. The system is set up to where the coaches encourage athletes to train all year round, but there’s also pressure from the athletes themselves. Even when an athlete is given a situation where it’s truly voluntary, they still might be practicing. It’s the competitive nature of sports.” (New 2015) What Nagel is trying to say is that, even though the coaches claim that the off-season workouts are optional, they are not actually optional. Also, the coaches have put so much pressure on the students that even if it actually is optional, the student athletes still believe they must go. Therefore, although they are called student-athletes, they aren’t as much the student part as they are the athlete. It is almost as if the sport was a job and the schooling was the extracurricular
to attend classes a certain amount of time and so should the athletes. Whenever athletes miss
Over the course of history, starting from the early 16th century there have been several countries that have strived to imperialize other countries in order to achieve a myriad of goals. Consequently, imperialism has led to monumental effects that were viewed from a variety of perspectives. Great Britain was among the many countries that set up a policy of expansion and imperialized foreign powers including India and Africa. Overall, it is inevitable that Britain’s motives in imperialism was to obtain raw materials and resources which was spurred by the Industrial Revolution, a greater need for markets in order to sell goods, and a final motive being the want to spread Christianity. Although imperialism allowed Britain to gain more power, exclusive trading rights and land, it
Postpartum Depression is depression that occurs after performing childbirth. This condition is often mistaken for the “baby blues” which has similar symptoms such as tearfulness, extreme sadness, anxiety, self-doubt, and fatigue. However, the “baby blues” goes away within a few weeks after and unlike the “baby blues”, postpartum depression can cause suicidal thoughts, difficulty making decisions, and feeling too exhausted to get out of bed for hours. If postpartum depression is not treated properly or soon enough it can drastically effect the lives of those who have developed it as well as their families. This is because a mother is a very important figure in one’s life because she is the first person that an individual ever makes an emotional connection with; she’s also the first one to play the role of supplying nourishment to her child. Consequently, “PPD can affect familial relationships and a woman’s capacity to care for and bond with her newborn. Some research indicates that young children of depressed mothers are at increased risk of delay in cognitive and language development” (McGarry, Kim, Sheng, Egger, & Baksh, 2009). Postpartum depression can take hold of a woman and her family’s life and is one of the most common complications of childbirth. However, “postpartum depression (PPD) is less frequently detected, treated, or the focus of obstetric research” (McGarry et al., 2009). This is because mothers suffering with postpartum depression are unable to seek proper
The film “Coach Carter” demonstrates many great examples of good communication between coach and athlete. I will point out a few examples of good communication from the film and I will explain why the examples I discuss demonstrate characteristics of effective communication. I will use a few excerpts out of the communication chapter of our text book, Chapter 11. I will use these excerpts from Chapter 11 of our text book to explain why the examples/quotes from the film, that I have pointed out, demonstrate good communication skills. The film “Coach Carter” is a great film about a high school basketball team that is located in a bad area of town. The
Coach Carter also displays transformational leadership. Transformational leadership is the ability of a leader to get people to do more than they originally expected to do in support of large scale innovation and change; the leader inspire and excite followers to high level of performance (Nelson & Quick, 2013). According to Marquis & Huston (1992), there are five key qualities of a transformational leader. One of the qualities is having the passion and ability to inspire. Transformational leaders show passion in their work and have the capacity to pass this passion on to others. Coach Carter is successful in achieving this through setting clear expectations and demonstrates passion when doing this. At their first team meeting, Carter hands each student a contract, setting out his expectations of the contracts. If they do not sign and follow it, they do not play. Coach Carter aims to pass on his passion to the players enabling them to succeed in playing sports and succeed in their education. Another quality transformational leaders possess is the ability to pass their values on to others. According to Marquis & Huston (1992), people admire leaders that support their own values and beliefs by enabling others to understand how their own values make them who they are. Coach Carter encourages a team ethic throughout. Carter ensures his team takes this on board by stopping everyone from playing – academic achiever or not. He’s teaching that successful teams succeed because of
The movie plot surrounded the main character of Coach Boone, an African American football coach who transferred to a new school district that has just been desegregated. Coach Boone is a leader, not only as the head of a football team but an influence of positive change. He uses his legitimate power when first approaching his new team, then uses referent and reward power as team cohesion increases. He defined the team and set difficult goals with clear performance expectations when he tells the players he expects perfection. He accomplishes this perfection through leading and influencing others, like the team captains and his assistant coach. When Coach Boone first met his players he announced that no one would be cut from the team. He allowed his captains to decide who the undesirable members were and for them to decide to cut the players themselves. Coach Boone was also quick to identify his key stakeholders, the players. This allowed him to focus his efforts on the team atmosphere and organizational commitment and not on his new position.
When participation in a sport in high school, it may interfere with class work, meaning an athlete may have to leave class early in order to participate in a game or tournament. With doing so, it is up to the student to get their work done. They have to make it up on their own time in order to make up what they missed in class. This teaches students time management and motivates students to try their best in order to make up work they missed. All coaches should take into consideration that if a student does not have the grades, then the athlete may not participate in competition or practice. Even this rule applies to the team’s best athlete, grade ineligibility applies to everyone. When it comes to high school, the sport itself generates motivation to keep the student on top of things and wanting to thrive for greatness in academics and athletics as well (“Merkel,”). All students should know that grades come before athletics. This will make student athletes aware of the minimum GPA that will be needed to be maintained in order to participate in athletics (“The Benefits of Participating in Sports”). Consequently, it forces students to learn
On the other hand some may argue if it is or not fair to other students for athletes to not have to take a P.E. class. Many might think it would be giving special treatment to athletes and discrimination against those who lack athletic ability (Barrientos). Billy Martin, a gym teacher and boys varsity basketball coach said that “Gym teaches students how to become physically fit and make choices to stay that way for life.(Cox)” However schools can conduct a policy that says how much work and effort is put into their sport and how students
At their finest, coaches perfect their player’s flaws to push them to their potential ability, improve their skills, and create determination within the team. They can expand the importance of such a sport to intensify motivation and the value of good sportsmanship for the sake of not only their reputation, but the outcome that comes from it. Coaches must not lag when it comes to hardships that comes about; they must stay connected. The closer the connection between a player and a coach the better they are moving forward and continuing on the love of the sport and job.
