If you have ever read the play, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, you have most likely heard the question, “Who is to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet?” The play Romeo and Juliet is about two star-crossed lovers who fall in love but are not supposed to because of their family feud. Unfortunately, Romeo and Juliet end up dying at the end of a tragic play. The top people who would be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet are Romeo and Juliet themselves, Friar Laurence, and Lord Capulet. Although, characters such as Tybalt, Mercutio, and Nurse Capulet had quite a bit to do with the deaths of Romeo and Juliet; the characters mentioned above have much more to do with the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. One reason why one would blame Romeo for the deaths of himself and Juliet is that he had the opportunity to decline the option to go to the Capulet party even though Benvolio and Mercutio pushed him to go. Juliet says, “Three words, dear Romeo, and good night indeed. If that thy bent of love be honorable, Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow” (Acts 2, Scene 2, Lines 142-144). This proves that Juliet is quick to mention marriage and Romeo is quick to accept her marriage proposal even though they don’t know each other well enough and their families are feuding. Juliet asks, “What o’clock tomorrow shall I send to thee?” Romeo replies by saying, “By the hour of nine.” (Act 2 Scene 2 Lines 171-172) Even though Romeo and Juliet are to blame for their own deaths; Friar Laurence is also to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. Friar Laurence can be blamed for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. The main reason why one would blame Friar Laurence for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet is because he agreed to marry Romeo to Juliet.
