When students are bullied, they are encouraged to speak up about it to a teacher or some other adult; however, many do not, because they may think their cases are not important enough to be told, because no one will believe their stories, or because they are embarrassed by what happened. As these cases turn from simple bullying to a more severe event, this inability to speak up only increases. Laurie Halse Anderson shows this effect with being raped, as well as the emotional damage that goes with it. Through Melinda’s experiences in Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson’s writing reflects the time in which it was written, her views on teens and the adolescent years, and her early life.

The house is almost completely empty besides you and your stuff, but every else and there stuff was gone. What would you do? Lay there and die? Or go get help? No, never give up on people when they need it even if they are sick with a deadly disease, help others like if you would want help, too. The book, Crucible is the source behind this essay based on the incidents which happened in the town of Salem in 1692. The happenings in this point of history is most popularly known as “The Salem Witch Trials.” The author of this book wrote this because of his involvement in the Cold War when he was accused of things he either did or did not do. What happened in his life during the Cold War is parallel to the characters in the town of Salem when they are accused and brought before a court to determine their innocence and interaction with the Devil. From observing the Crucible by Arthur Miller the cause of the Salem Witch Trials is stupidity and an insecurity to hold a good reputation; selfishness found on three accounts: the church/court, John Proctor, and Abigail.
Appearance has a massive amount of importance in today's society, and that brings on a magnificent amount of insecurity in today's youth. What people see and how they react to their reflection in a mirror will vary. How someone views oneself is a very important subject to that person's state of mind, this can lead to a person being confident or being very insecure. In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the mirrors display Melinda's frustrations towards herself, such as a negative appearance. On page 37 you can almost feel her negative reaction from her reflection. “Seeing her reflection in the window, she was struck dumb her face is streaked with tears. (36)”

Shirley Jackson’s novel, The Haunting of Hill House, explores the cultural anxieties in the mid 20th century. Specifically, men use womanhood (societal norms) as purposely infantilizing women in order to confine the female mind. Jackson utilizes symbolism, metaphor, and anaphora in her novel in order to convey the message for men to stop infantilizing women. Moreover, Jackson spreads awareness that women are being confined by a system that men developed: womanhood. Hence, in effect, the novel serves as an informal protest against male repression through a medium that can be read by a wider audience —more importantly an indirect challenge to male readers. According to Krolokke, Second Wave Feminism became prominent due to cultural discontent with patriarchy during the mid 20th century. Moreover, Krolokke informs the readers that Second Wave Feminism influenced women to challenge traditional family roles and male ideologies about women not belonging in the workplace (11-12). Mid 20th century is also when Jackson published The Haunting of Hill House. So, with these historical and cultural contexts in mind, Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House ends the novel with Eleanor killing herself because she wants women to challenge the ideas of patriarchy into effect. Hence, Second Wave Feminism has a connection to Eleanor having a childlike personality (can not think for herself) because she wants women (especially young and single women) to explore their rights (their choices) and
