Throughout Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, several people greatly influenced the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. They caused unhappiness to the young lovers with their actions. The ones responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet are the Montagues, Capulets and Friar Laurence.
Firstly, the Montagues are responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. They constantly began brawls with the Capulets, which made it difficult for Romeo and Juliet to be lovers, or even companions. In act 1 scene 1, Abram quarrelled with Sampson against his will. The detestation these families displayed is intense and it is tough for two people to love if their families disapprove of each other. Other Montague men who were responsible for their tragedy are Benvolio and Mercutio. Romeo came across Juliet through them. The two men pressured Romeo to make an appearance at the Capulet’s gathering and he exclaimed, “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night,” (I, v, 51-53) at the sight of Juliet. Mercutio and Benvolio were the reason those two met. Prior to the event, they foretold Romeo would meet another woman and he did; it was Juliet. Mercutio and Benvolio’s convincing caused them to meet. The first poor decision that Romeo makes is when he goes to the Capulet’s ball where he first meets Juliet. Unfortunately, Tybalt is more skilled with the sword than Mercurio, leading to the murder of Mercutio. With this, Romeo is heartbroken and enraged. His best friend had just been killed by one of his enemies who is also his lover family.

In contrast, Mercutio attempts to stop Tybalt’s thirst for vengeance when he tries to duel Romeo but ultimately gets killed in the process of trying to save his good friend from being killed by Tybalt which causes Romeo to take vengeance upon Tybalt by killing him.
