If you asked any average American on the street to describe our government, what do you think he/she would say? It's likely they would paint a picture rife with political deadlocks, skyrocketing debt, hate-filled campaign seasons and the splitting of the entire country between conservative and liberal ideologies. Many believe that if congress isn't angering an entire half of the nation's voters with controversial laws, it's blocking the president from getting anything done! Who's to blame? A lot of people, especially millennials, think that our political parties are to blame. If only the Democrats and Republicans could get along and hear each other out, we wouldn't have these problems. Many even believe that if we eliminated political parties from the system completely, we would be better off and look like a real democracy, like ancient Greece. The Greeks had things figured out, right? We based everything else off them anyway. …show more content…
Clearly the founders of our great nation wouldn't have wanted such a broken system. In fact, many people cite this famous George Washington quote: “However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things...by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.” -From
The author, John H. Aldrich, argues that the contemporary political party are not in decline. John H. Aldrich want us to believe that contemporary political party are not in a decline but, instead in transformation. John H. Aldrich give cases for both the importance of political parties and for weak and weakening parties.
Watson’s focus on political parties, chapter 6, is an important part of this book. Not only does it support his argument, but it also gives the reader
“The performance of our federal government could hardly be any worse than it is today” (Douglas). The Land of Liberty’s current government is one of the worst of all its time. How so? According to many professional writers, the United States government has become extremely dysfunctional over the course of the last few years. Those credible writers all agree that polarization and tribalism affect politicians and citizens. Thus, creating a dysfunctional Washington.
Publius states that it is not possible to smother a faction but what our country can do is control its effects. A republican form of government promises the cure of controlling factions. Through elected officials, the peoples voice will be channeled and there will be, “more consonant to the public good then if pronounced by the people themselves (Publius,77).”
It does not hurt to reflect upon history and to determine what should and should not be implemented as to correct our previous faults and thus not repeat them in borderline insane process. Furthermore, this presidential election has shaken both political parties as both of them are scrambling for party unity instead of creating other beliefs which resulted in a gathered hate against both political candidates. I proudly state that I have reconsidered my political preference during this election as I am sure others did too. Unfortunately, I firmly believe that political parties are the only way to inspire and gather people with similar beliefs and aspirations as it is the only way we know how to approach politics. The systematic organization of the political process and parties is held to a fault based upon prejudices and predisposed historical follies, from there causes the intolerance of ideology. As what Alexander Hamilton said “If men were angels, government would cease to exist” which poses a paradoxical situation of flawed mankind redirecting other faulted humans as there is bound to lapse of judgement between the ideal representation of government versus vice. There is definitely no easy way as to fix this problem as we are too in depth in it, however the idea
“…that our governments are too unstable, that the public good is disregarded in the conflicts of rival parties, and that measures are too often decided, not according to the rules of justice and the rights of the minor party, but by the superior force of an interested and overbearing majority.”
To understand political power aright, and derive it from its original, we must consider what estate all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of Nature, without asking leave or depending upon the will of any other man (...)
Our government gets a grade of C. The layers of bureaucratic waste were front in center with each week’s lesson. The founding fathers had good intentions but our leaders today seemed to have lost direction and proper focus. The negativity and division even, within their own parties of government officials is disconcerting. The system would work better if THEY learned how to be civil, respectful and more understanding of each other and realize that ever opinion matters and that working together they can archive more.
Generally speaking, anyone who lives in the United States of America knows that there are two main political parties—the Republicans and the Democrats. Having two main parties has its advantages and, of course, its disadvantages. For example, in By the People James E. Monroe and Rogan Kersh (301) point out having this type of system creates “predictability and stability.” However, they also declare (301) it can “lead to a gridlock.” This is not a new concept either as there has been a divide since the beginning of both parties. The two parties more often than not disagree on various issues, while rarely agreeing on what is best for the country.
It is overrun by greed, poverty, and a growing separation of social classes. Concerning the government, very powerful people have a tendency to abuse their power. This affects the citizens greatly by not having a fair system of equality. The corrupted are only out for personal gain, therefore, they manage to not do their job properly. The infamous President Nixon is just one of many great examples. Despite the corruption, there are many figures of society that do great things for the people, but not enough to make a lasting impact. The growing issues of murder, robbery, abuse of illegal substances, and violence, have infected the streets of our country. With the idea that such things exist, why have there not been more successful tactics to stop it? It seems as though the government is much more concerned with stuffing their pockets than improving lower class society. Regarding the government, they say that they are going to take action, but there is rarely ever truth in that statement. Above the destitute are people that have more money than they could ever spend away. In addition, there are people struggling to survive in less fortunate areas of America that could live months off the daily salary of the wealthy. They barely make enough money to have a place to live, or food to put on their table. Children starve, end up in foster care, which is a failed system in itself, and end up homeless. Instead of focusing on other countries, maybe it
My expectations of our federal government is as follows: first thing is that all three branches of the federal government remain in charge of the subject they are entitled to. The first branch is the legislative which is when the congress makes the laws. The second branch is the executive which is when the president, vice president and cabinet carry out those laws. The third and last branch is the judicial which is when the Supreme Court and other courts evaluates the laws. The Federal government provides certain safety and regulatory and educational services for the people. The first main important thing that the government does for us is the national security to maintain our rights to freedom. Another important thing is that they provide
The amount of entertainers opting not to participate has been unprecedented. This entire election has been the oddest yet in our countries history. Sure, we've seen people decline these invitations in the past due to which party one or something as ridiculous as the color of one's skin. We just haven't ever seen it at the numbers we see this year.
There are copious Americans who believe that the political party system is shattering our nation. In my opinion, our nation would not be the nation we are today without political parties. Other than presenting candidates and electoral campaigns to the electorate, political parties perform innumerable tasks to better the United States of America. They serve as institutionalized mediators between our society and duly elected representatives who are responsible for determining and executing legislations. They seek public policy priorities and civic needs and concerns identified by their affiliates and supporters. Political parties educate the people on how the political, electoral system, and general political values work. By doing so, voters are well informed of each party’s stance on specific matters. They also inspire individuals to participate in political decisions and turning their outlooks into policy options for all. Unlike other countries, America is a democratic nation we want our people to freely voice their thoughts and support the party who shares their interest and perspectives. In addition, political parties help to annihilate any unexpected shifts in political trends that hold the ability to disrupt the balance of our government. As we all know our nation is a two -party system that assist in advocating stability in the government, because there will only ever be two
With these changes, we could fix these problems. If we put other branches in place so multiple groups have the same amount of power. If we change the voting to 58% instead of 100%. If we have it be mandatory that states give money to the government, and let the qualified people have the money they deserve, we could have a functioning
We live in this country for the land, and the for the free as Americans we rely on many attributes in this world in order for us to live our lives. Our government has supplied us with many great things for us to be proud of. Our government is “the institutions and processes though which public policies are made for society.” (Edwards, Wattenberg, and Lineberry, p. 7). With all these institutions which includes the President, Congress, the courts and all the federal administrative agencies. These are the institutions that make up public policies for us, and to shape the way we live as Americans. The way this system has been operating through all the years has been
