Who is to Blame? Have you’ve ever been included in a major disaster and did not know who to blame? When a tragedy occurs and a numerous amount of people are involved it can be very easy to accuse another. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, it starts as a simple love story until a tragedy occurs that leaves one question, who is really at fault? Friar Laurence is truly to blame for the tragic events because he married Romeo and Juliet, he gave Juliet the plan that lead to her and Romeo’s death, and didn’t tell anyone about the events taking place. Friar Laurence is at fault for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because he not only encouraged Romeo and Juliet to marry but he was the one to marry them. “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; For this alliance may so happy prove…. To turn your households’ rancor to pure love” (Act 2, Scene 3, Lines 90-92). Despite thinking that it is a bad idea to marry Romeo and Juliet, especially in secret, he still did it in hopes of bringing peace to the two feuding families. If the friar didn’t marry them, Juliet would not have taken risks that lead to her death, to avoid marrying Paris. “ To rouse thee from thy bed, there art thou dead….. Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift…. Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua” (Act 4, Scene 1, Lines 106, 114, 116). The friar’s plan of Juliet faking her death and then running away with Romeo had so many risks that can easily lead to their death. Both Romeo and Juliet have threatened to kill themselves if they couldn’t be with the other and the friar’s plan failed so it lead to them doing just as they threatened.
