Abortion is described as “the ending of pregnancy by removing a fetus or embryo before it can survive outside the uterus.” The subject of abortion has been at the forefront of Canadian and American politics alike. From statements from the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau saying, “we made the Liberal Party a truly liberal party when delegates decisively endorsed a motion defending a woman’s right to choose whether to have an abortion.” Meanwhile, the President of the United States has a strong pro-life stance and is quoted saying that “women who have abortions should face some sort of legal punishment.” With these polar points of views from the leaders of neighboring countries, comes similar ideas from their citizens with similar points of views.
On the pro-life side of the discussion, Austin Forrest Anthis III wrote a guest article on The Chronicle titled “Why abortion is wrong.” Austin first point in the article is comparing what is more damaging to a woman the death of their baby in the womb or the trauma the mother would endure for carrying that baby. Austin provides an argument by saying “innocent human life should be valued more highly than the utilitarian benefits the society would gain by eliminating them.” Austin goes on to say that the children in the womb are helpless and do not have a choice in the abortion, they cannot put up a fight. Austin provides an alternative to the reality that some women do not have the money to raise a child, which is adoption.
