Why Are Charter Schools Effective

Charter schools are public institutions, supported by public funds. The have greater freedom from state rules and regulations than a traditional public school. Charter schools are typically free to design curriculum, and promote certain standards. A charter school must negotiate a contract or “charter”, usually with a local school district designed by the state. Each charter may vary, because each state has different education laws. All contracts must describe school goals, how the school will be run, the amount of public money it will receive, and the degree of freedom it will be given. I am for charter schools because they can be an effective alternative to neighborhood public schools.

Charter schools have the advantage of deciding what kind of student they are catering to; whether that student at a high or low academic level, educators can focus in on certain groups of students to make sure their needs are met. Having smaller groups of students allows teachers to give more one-on-one to students in need. Whereas in larger pubic school classrooms, there is less interaction between teachers and students.

Another advantage of charter schools is that they have greater accountability. In order for a charter school to be successful they have to attract students. Charter schools tell parents what they intend to do, show they've worked with other children, and have really good plans for helping the students that have different levels of achievement; these types of charter schools are the ones that parents need to look for.
