Did you know that about 10,000 people die from hurricanes each year? That is why it is important that we know about hurricanes so we can study them more closely, hoping to find information about how to keep people safer. To start off, we must know what a hurricane is. A hurricane is a massive storm that is very destructive. They can tear families apart, ruin whole cities, and kill thousands of people. Hurricanes start on the ocean spinning at least 74 mph and can get winds up to 200 mph! These ginormous storms, can be up to 600 miles wide, causing extreme damage, especially if they strike land. In the Northern Hemisphere, hurricanes spin counterclockwise, and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Hurricanes may appear, and sound fascinating, but I guarantee that if you are ever actually stuck in one, the are not. It is also critical to know how hurricanes form. The way hurricanes form is very complicated. Hurricanes must form on very warm ocean water, at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Then the air has to cool very quickly. The wind also must be blowing in the same direction, and the same speed. When all of these ingredients are put together, they make huge cumulonimbus clouds. But knowing when and where hurricanes will strike land is still very important, especially when you live in Hurricane prone areas. Some of the most places vulnerable to hurricanes are Tampa, Florida, Miami, Florida, New Orleans, Louisiana, Norfork, Virginia, and Houston Texas. Listen to your weather radio to know when a hurricane will strike and where it is expected to be the most damage.
