Why Are Parafollicular Cells Important

Satisfactory Essays
Parafollicular cells, commonly known as C-cells, are a type of cell inside of the thyroid gland, which is located in your neck. They produce and secrete a type of hormone named calcitonin which they take from the iodine that is in most of the foods that you eat. This helps regulate many of the important bodily functions that keep you alive, such as calcium metabolism. However, these cells can become cancerous, and if not treated, you can die because the C-Cells won’t be able to produce the hormones that you need to survive. When your body doesn’t have hormones, it can cause heart failure.
