Why should assault weapons be banned? One of the guns used in Columbine was a 9mm carbine and in the Sandy Hook massacre a Bushmaster XM15-E2S rifle were both assault weapons. Dylan Klebold and Eric Herres got their weapons illegally same with the people that shoot up Sandy Hook. If assault weapons were banned at that time all of the students that died that day would still be alive and probably should have bright futures. That just proves that anyone can get assault weapons illegally or legally. Assault weapons should be banned because they could get sold illegally to the wrong people and cause violence. One of the many great advantages to being an American is the ability to choose for one's own self what to believe in. Another advantage, in my opinion, is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Laws should not restrict gun rights because first, it would infringe the second amendment, second, guns are a part of our culture, and finally, if guns were outlawed, citizens of the U.S. would become vulnerable.

Assault rifles are a huge waste of ammo and money, they were not designed for recreational or target shooting they were designed for military use. I do realize why some people may want gun free zone but I do not think that they helps at all, the only thing it does is tell the criminals that you are unarmed and have no way to defend yourself. The majority of mass shootings happen in gun free zones. I think that many mass shooting could have been deterred if the area was not a gun free zone and if someone else was armed. Background checks are also a good idea, they make it so criminals or mentally unstable people can not get their hands on firearms. In Colorado, fake toy guns cannot be sold unless they are bright green, blue, red or another neon color, or have bright orange stripes on both sides of the barrel. This is even tougher than the federal law on fake toy guns, which says they must have an orange plug in the barrel. The purpose of Colorado law is to stop police from accidentally shooting people with fake guns, and prevent fake guns from being used in robberies, because the deceptive fake guns cannot easily be distinguished from real guns.
