“ Why Change Matters” How did three individuals change not only their lives, but also their countries? Melba Pattillo Beals from the memoir, Warriors Don’t Cry, Jackie Robinson from the autobiography, I Never Had it Made, and Feng Ru from the article, “The Father of Chinese Aviation” written by Rebecca Maksel. Beals, Robinson, and Feng Ru all impacted their countries as well as changing their lives with hard work and dedication. Melba Pattillo Beals broke the color barrier which helped African American education excel. Some of these events challenged Beals because she faced racism. “Some of the white people looked totally horrified, while others raised their fists to us, others shouted ugly words.” (Beals). Many people were afraid of Melba because of her race, but other people did not like her because of her race. This caused Melba Pattillo Beals to grow and develop by her learning how to mature as a person. “I felt proud and sad at the same time. Proud that I lived in a country that would go this far to bring justice to a Little Rock girl like me, but sad that they had to go to such great lengths.” (Beals). Beals finally understood why integration was happening, and also understood who and why people went against it. Melba Pattillo Beals also developed with tolerance and made a statement on how she felt. “I walked on the concrete path toward the front door of the school, the same path the Arkansas National Guard had blocked us from days before.” (Beals). Beals wanted to integrate Central High School so blacks could actually have an education.
