Why Cursive Handwriting Should Be Taught In School

Through the years, many people have stated that cursive should not be taught in schools. Reading historical documents, personalization, and brain function involves cursive. Cursive writing definitely has a place in our digital society.

Did you know cursive takes away core subjects like Math and Reading? Well, it does and that’s bad because that means you could make you less smart. In my opinion, cursive writing should not be taught today. First, it takes too much time. Second, it’s frustrating for parents. Lastly, you can gain a life skill because cursive might be easy for you when you grow up.

You process the information visually, you write the information on paper, and you record the notes in your memory. This helps retain learning and develop new ideas. Studies have shown improved scores on reading and spelling for students who learn cursive as connected letters instead of parts. Cursive writing can also be used as a tool for students who have learning difficulties such as Dyslexia.

First of all, yes cursive should be taught in all 50 states, because it’s a skill you need to have as an adult. Without knowing cursive you wouldn’t be able to sign your name or read the constitution. For instance, in the last 10 years there has been an argument against the cursive letter disappearing. Many people blame the “Common Core” which finalized in 2010. Cursive is a standard writing skill that has been taught for many years.

In conclusion I believe that we don’t need cursive in schools. First of all kids are more impressed with technology to spend the time and neatness on cursive. The 20th century skill is not needed in these 21st century skilled classroom, but in these classrooms we just need normal handwriting also if u want your kids to learn cursive u spend your time on it teachers have to teach them normal handwriting enough. In 3rd grade summer school the first thing they showed us was cursive. Did you even know that hand writing is 50% of literacy? Or that it helps us write faster? Which is helpful for when we go to college. If we don’t learn cursive how on earth are we supposed to sign are name? Honestly in my opinion cursive should be taught today. It should be used in everyday life.

Handwriting is very important in day to day life. Without it, there are many things that we could not do. If you know print that is great but you are even better off if you know cursive also. Children as young as 4 years old show the benefits of hand writing before they are even able to read or write actual words. Advantages to writing by hand include better letter memorization and better memorization of shapes in 4-year-old children. (Longcamp in Wollscheild 2016) Also, hand writing leads to better development in both reading and math and provides a foundation for further academic achievement.
