Atlas was the Titan God of astronomy and navigation. He was the son of Iapetus and Clymene, and the brother of Prometheus, Epithemus, and Menoetius. He was married to his sister, Phoebe, and had lots of children including the Hesperides, the Hyades, Hyas, the Pleiades, Dione, Maera, and Calypso. Atlas had the Atlantic Ocean named after him; Atlantic meaning the “Sea of Atlas” and the lost city; Atlantis meaning the “Island of Atlas”. In the Titans and Olympians war, Atlas had taken Cronus’s side on the Titans against Zeus. Atlas had taken over leading the Titans due to Cronus’s infirmity of old age. Zeus had gotten irritated over the ten year long battle with no advancement to either side. Like the cheater Zeus is, he went down to Tartarus, killed the creature that was protecting what he wanted, snatched up the Giants and Cyclopses, and used them in battle. The Cyclopses had given Zeus the ability to use thunder and lightning as a weapon in return of their freedom. With the ability to strike anyone with lightning, Zeus brought down Cronus. Atlas was one of twelve of Hercules’s labors. With Eurystheus knowing that the Hesperides were Atlas’s daughters, he had Hercules require Atlas to go grab the golden apples from Ladon, a one-hundred headed dragon, and his daughters. Hercules had told Atlas that he would take over his job of holding up the sky to give him a break while he went on his journey. He agreed to the offer and went to get the apples. When Atlas had come back with the golden apples, he didn’t want to take his job of holding the sky back. He wanted his break to last forever. Atlas had tried to trick Hercules into holding the sky forever, but the sneaky mortal had his own trick up his sleeve. He swapped back with Atlas “temporarily” so he could hand the apples over to the Mycenaean king and Atlas was left with holding the
The titans overthrow their father Uranos with their mother’s help, but before Uranos can be banished into Tartarus, he prophesizes that his son Cronos would be overthrown by his own children. In fear of his father’s curse, Cronos swallows his offspring as soon as they are born. To protect her youngest child, his wife Rhea hides Zeus and gives Cronos a rock instead of her son. Over the years, Zeus develops a plan to save his siblings and end Cronos’ tyranny, ultimately freeing them. As a result, the Titanomachy–a war between gods and titans–ensues, with the outcome of the gods’ victory and the establishment of the new era with Zeus as king of the gods.
her to give him the baby so he could swallow it. She hid Zeus in a
When the cyclopes were locked in Tartarus, Zeus was fighting the Titans. Gaea told Zeus to go to Tartarus and unlock the cyclopes and also their brothers, the Hekatoncheires. Zeus freed them. The cyclopes were so grateful that they made a lightning bolt for Zeus, a cap of invisibility for Hades and a trident for Poseidon. With the Cyclopes help the Olympians won the Titanomachy.
He is also the son of Cronus and Rhea, and is the second most powerful god. He is one of the three supreme gods of the Earth. (Gall.)
The story of Cronos, king of the Titans, was that he had four children with his wife Rhea. These Children are Hestia, Demeter, Poseidon, and Hades, all of whom he swallowed because his parents had warned that he would be overthrown by his child. When Zeus was born, Rhea hid him in Crete and tricked Cronos into swallowing a stone instead. Zeus grew up with nymphs and a goat named Amalthae. When Zeus heard what had happened to his siblings he gave Cronos poison, which forced Cronos to throw-up his brothers and sisters. A war was then fought between the two groups, and the Olympians won, and ruled over the
Atlas values people being responsible for their own actions, rather than relying on others, so his tendency would want the couple to handle their problems on their own. Atlas puts emphasis on doing the actions himself throughout his encounter with the Herculean Hercules, by belaboring the fact that he himself would take the apples to Eurysteus. Conversely, the couple is relying on the gods to use a spell, instead of handling their own problems. Atlas does not support that the couple relies upon the gods, and clearly makes his decision and vote based on his values. Therefore, he definitely does not support casting any sort of
Zeus was the child of the Titans, Cronus and Rhea, and was the youngest of all his siblings. Cronus , Zeus’ father, had been warned that one of his children would overthrow him. Cronus knew the consequences, for he had overthrown his father, Uranus. To prevent this from
This piece of art is supposed to be an interpretation of the Greek myth of Atlas. In this myth Atlas has to hold the world on his shoulders and in this drawing the young girl representing child labour is shown holding the world to support the greedy businessmen. It is believed to have been drawn by Lewis Wicks Hine. He worked as a photographer and was strongly against child labour. As a result of his focus, this drawing was probably made to show how unfair child labor was. Even though this was created in the early 20th century in America it reflects the same dynamic that was going on during the Victorian era. It has the same ideas that children made up most of the work force during the Industrial Revolution yet they were not fully compensated.
Zeus’ affinity for being the main character of a myth is no different in the epic myth about his fight against Cronus and the Titans or the “Titanomachy.” In this larger-than-life battle Zeus has to overthrow his father Cronus and take his predestined place as king of the gods. In this myth however, Zeus has to grow and overcome many challenges that stand in his way to greatness. Zeus has to ask for help from his mother in order to be able to free his sibling from his father Cronus who had swallowed them whole. After Zeus frees his siblings he has to face the mighty Titans, so he asks the Cyclops and the Hecatonchires to aid him in this battle that lasts
Zeus was the supreme god and ruler of Olympus. He was known by many names: Lord of the Sky, the Rain-god, the Cloud-gatherer, and Zeus the Thunderer. Zeus was the sixth child born to Cronus and Rhea behind Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, Dementer, and Hera. The high soaring eagle was sacred to him, and to the Romans he was known as Jupiter. Zeus was a strong, mighty, awesome, glorious, and wise god. Although, he was very foolish and naïve with hiding his love affairs from Hera.
I chose to write about Zeus for my independent project. By the time my paper is written and finished, I can only hope to have discovered more and more information about him than at the beginning of this essay. Some things I do want to remember and learn about him are what made him so great, is he the Greek God’s leader, and what did he accomplish? When somebody speaks about Greek mythology, it seems as though everyone wants to talk about Zeus. Another thing that I hear very often when Zeus is mentioned is the fact that he controls/carries the lightning bolt. That is Zeus’s symbol. I have for a long while been itching to take in more about him yet never thought to consider his history until today.
The battle ended well for the gods, but not so well for the titans, all but three were sent to down to tartarus. Atlas, the general sentenced to hold the world on his shoulders for eternity, Prometheus, as he had given Zeus advice during the war, and Epimetheus who had never participated in war. The choices of the battle were made and sides were chosen, but the gods came out on top leading to the fall of Kronos and reign of
Once Zeus was fully grown he returned to his father’s realm and with the help of his mother, hoodwinked Cronus to drink an emetic that made him disgorge his children (Leadbetter). It was these children: Hades, Poseidon, Hestia, Hera and Demeter who helped Zeus wage the Titan war against Cronus. The women titans refused to help Cronus defeat the Olympians and even a few male titans helped aid the Olympians. After ten years of battles, the Olympians were able to banish the Titans into the Underworld (Titanomachy). It was after this war that Zeus seized the throne and divided the sky, the underworld, and the sea amongst him and his brothers. (Hades: the underworld, Poseidon: the sea, and Zeus: the sky.)
Zeus’ most significant and well known power was the ability to hold lightning bolts. He could throw them like a javelin at people or gods that did not please him or defied him. He had his winged horse Pegasus carry his lighting bolts and had his eagle pick them up after he threw them. That was not his only power however, Zeus had the ability to control the weather with his temper. When he was in a happy mood the skies would be
The supreme ruler and king of gods, Zeus, is often mentioned as Jupiter and the sender of thunder, lightning, rain, and wind (Britannica.com). “Zeus was the first of the gods and a very imposing figure. Often referred to as ‘the father of gods and men,’ he is a sky god who controls lightning.” (Britannica.com) Although the god is labeled most powerful and the mightiest of all, he is not perfect. Zeus is known for his promiscuous action. Often times he fell in love with one woman after the other and attempted to disguise his infidelity from his wife. Zeus left no woman behind in his crazy love-life, the god married and had children with his sister, Hera and. Hera was not Zeus’ only siblings. He also had two brothers, Poseidon and Hades and another sister named Hestia. His parents are known as Cronus and Rhea. Zeus was not just handed the title “god of the sky,” instead him and his two brothers drew lots. The sea was given to Poseidon, the underworld to Hades, and Zeus was named lord of the sky, rain god, and cloud gatherer. The eagle is considered sacred to this god. Zeus also treasures the oak tree. It is often told that the gods will was revealed by the rustling of the oak tree. (Hamilton 27)
