The success of German scientists like Haber can be attributed to the country’s ability to encourage research projects free of industrial aims or teaching duties. Although science was directly applied in German industries, the presence of pure scientific research allowed Germany to excel and dominate the field of science and technology. The reason for the German’s inability to win WW2 and its decline in science and technology can be attributed to the influence of Hitler and the Nazi Regime. Efficiency is the guiding principle of technology but under a totalitarian regime, other motives take over. The competition in a competitive market helps advance technology by encouraging scientist to not only design efficient technology; it forces them …show more content…
This idea was strongly supported by military men, especially Hitler, who had been exposed to and have witnessed the destructive power of the gas. The German General Carl von Einem was quoted saying: “I am furious about the gas and its deployment, which has disgusted me from the outset.” He also referred to the use of the gas as “very unchivalrous too, otherwise used only by blackguards and criminals (Cornwell).” To these military men, the purpose of a war is show ones dominance over another country. Winning the war proved that the victor had the best men, weapons, generals, and military strategy. The use of the gas took away all the glory of warfare. This is why the use of poison gas is prohibited in warfare, still to this …show more content…
Although we know that global warming is a reality the United States has not made as much progress as other countries when it comes to the research and development of alternative energy. When oil prices started to rise it seemed as if more Americans would be willing to buy hybrid cars, and scientists were working hard to come up with an alternative energy sources and products like cars that would be cheaper and more efficient than gas guzzlers. Instead, the government lowered its dependence on foreign oil and started to drill and frack oil domestically, which lead to a dramatic drop in gas prices that we are still experiencing today. Now that gas prices are lower American consumers are no longer pressured to look for a cheaper and safer alternative to gas and oil. It is also rumored that many oil companies use their influence to slow down any progress in the research and development of alternative energy. In order to do what is best for humanity; our government needs to be more like the German government before Hitler. They need to give scientists the ability to think clearly and fund them without a particular agenda. When Germany operated this way, they were the front runners of the development of science and technology. In order to become the global leader in alternative energy we need to encourage our scientist to do what they do best,
The crushing defeat and ultimate failure of the Axis Powers was caused by significant events that had a great impact on the war. The Allies were victorious in 1945 due to the sheer military power of the United States, the infamous Soviet Transformation and the ‘Battle of Moscow’, the crushing fall of Japan and the vast resource differences between the Axis Powers and the Allies. These major events that took place during World War 2 helped shape the victorious outcome for the Allies, by not only weakening the German’s military force, but also its confidence.
Chemical warfare, while horrible, proved to be unwieldy and unpredictable, and relatively easy to counter. After some limited successes against unprepared opponents, the use of chemical gas had very little tactical benefit; the recognition of this limited utility is that after widespread use in 1915 - except for the short-lived effects of the introduction of mustard gas in 1917 - gas was abandoned by both sides as an effective tactic.
The defeat of Germany in World War Two was due to many factors. All of these factors were influenced by the leadership and judgment of Adolf Hitler. Factors such as the stand fast policy, Hitler's unnecessary and risky decision making in military situations, for example when attacking the USSR, and the declaration of war on the US. Plus other factors, like Hitler's alliance with Italy, despite its obvious weaknesses, and the pursuit of the final solution, can all be attributed to the poor leadership and judgement of the Fuhrer, which would eventually lead to the downfall of the Third Reich.
Global warming is caused by the after effects of fossil fuels, what then causes greenhouse gases. Representative Chellie Pingree who is the D-ME 1st District states, “There is an incredible renewable energy resource off both coasts of this country - wind and tidal energy that can power our economy, create good paying jobs and reduce greenhouse gas pollution.” This is a present day solution for preventing global warming. We need to take advantage of nature and use it for renewable energy. This means that it can decrease foil fuels, and increase the amount of electric items such as, cars, motorcycles, tractors, snowmobiles, lawnmowers, and it can even be going as far as airplanes. In conclusion, America has to use renewable energy where ever they
Are Americans thinking about the world they are leaving behind for future generations? Some argue yes, but I disagree. If we are truly considerate of the future generations, global warming would not be a prominent issue. Americans are not seeking alternative sources for energy that do not omit harmful chemicals, thinning the ozone. It is hard to comprehend the damaging effects of our actions for the reason that they may not show for years. In order to better understand the harmful effects of numerous chemicals used in America and around the world, one must put his or herself in the shoes of a climatologist and study the changing climate. Data has proven countless times the climate is gradually getting warmer. This seemingly unimportant
As the planet’s population continues to grow, so will the energy needs. Even with fast advancement of technology, humans are only able to extract so much oil in a given period. Relying solely on fossil fuels and pushing off the inevitable does not make sense. If all of the United States oil supply and every other non-renewable energy source had suddenly disappeared from the face of North America, Americans would have no choice but to rely on renewable energy resources and that would not be a problem. As more solar panels, windmills, and hydroelectric turbines were built and placed in their respective environments, the United States would be back on its feet within no time. This would eventually lead to lower energy costs and a much greener and environmentally friendly nation overall. In the long run, investing and focusing on renewable energy resources provides the United States with a fail-safe solution which would also provide citizens with the energy they need to power their everyday
As the war progressed and trench warfare led to virtual stalemates throughout the theater, the aversion to chemical weapons and the legal ramifications were subordinated to the military necessity of the gases (or at least the military necessity as judged by the German High Command). The Germans were especially well suited to chemical warfare because there chemical industry was by far the most advanced in the world
Poison gas, utmost frowned upon as it was seen as a cold blooded, devilry act but the French army resorted to its usage in 1914 in the hope to get superiority against Germany. Unfortunately as a result the Germans later used poison gas at mass with a devastating result, the Germans were amazed with the success of the gas, giving them a break in the lines.
Hitler’s Gift: The True Story of the Scientists Expelled by the Nazi Regime written by Jean Medawar and David Pyke is a very in-depth book on how German science and academics in general were greatly affected after Hitler came to power. Hitler’s rise would end up causing many leading scholars to flee Germany because of their religious upbringings leading to many great contributions being accredited to different countries. With Germany leading the world of science, having 33 out of 100 Nobel Prizes awarded to them before Hitler’s rise to power, they had the potential of being a power in the science and math world. Hitler’s dismissed Jews from state institutions with his Civil Service Law that forced anyone who served the public to be of Aryan descent. This led to many great physicists and mathematicians taking their ideals to different countries and slowing the academic developments of Germany.
At the Battle of Ypres, the Germans released a cloud of chlorine gas that moved slowly toward the Allies trench (Simkin). The French were completely unprepared so many climbed out of the trench and ran away. German chemist Fritz Haber developed the gas for use in war. The Chlorine gas causes wheezing, coughing, and fluid build up in the lungs leading to a painful death of asphyxiation (White). Arthur Guy Empey said, “There's a sort of greenish, yellow cloud rolling along the ground out in front, it's coming ---” “German gas is heavier than air and soon fills the trenches and dugouts.” “Out of our crew of six, we lost two killed and two wounded.” (Empey) Other gasses like mustard gas and phosgene were used. Mustard gas was not used to kill people however it severely maimed them. Mustard gas caused large blisters on contact and blindness. Phosgene worked very similarly to chlorine gas, however, it was invisible allowing it to remain undetected (CDC). Chemical warfare has since been banned around the world. Barbed wire also changed the course of
tax dollars to U.N. global warming programs”, as well as revoke the policies that prohibit unwarranted restrictions on drilling technology. By doing these things, it is easy to conclude that the United States does not want to make any action towards preventing global warming. Nevertheless, global warming is a real and traceable thing that important people like you should try to prevent. This can be done by the termination of drilling for oil and mining for coal, by taking one more step towards saving the environment, and therefore ensuring a safe future for generations to come. This earth is ours, and when we drill into it to get those energy sources, we are also ruining the planet. By taking actions such as taxing CO2 and putting money towards repairing the damage done to the environment, we can take one step towards a safer life. More money could go towards creating better technologies that use wind and solar power, that use hybrid cars and make the atmosphere less polluted. Jobs may be lost by moving towards renewable energy sources, but if we continue to use fossil fuels, there will be no future to worry about jobs again, and all will be
The Germans marked an epoch with chemical warfare during World War I. The horror that opposing countries experienced when being exposed to the merciless gas forced them to begin to concoct their own weapons, so they could compete with the Germans and their allies. David Cook, author of Chemical Warfare: World War I, explains the purpose of chemical weapons during the war was to cause enemy casualties, enfeeble the opposing troops’ ability to retaliate, briefly block the land that they are no longer able to defend in order to escape, and create chaos in the enemy’s lines. Chemical warfare allowed attackers using this weapon to have a major advantage over their enemies, resulting in the successful execution of missions and casualties with its toxicity. The strength and versatility was not the only cause of chaos during the introduction of chemical weapons by the Germans during World War I; twenty-six countries had made an agreement previous to the war to prohibit the use of asphyxiating or deleterious gases (“Hague Peace Conferences (1899 and
Hitler did not wish for a lengthy war and wanted a strategy that would triumph over other methods. Blitzkrieg supposedly was able to accomplish his ideals. It used all armaments at once in a surprise attack. This would penetrate enemy defences allowing Panzers to roam openly behind enemy resistance, causing shock, confusion and disorganization among enemy divisions. Luftwaffe prevented its foe from gaining superiority in the air by prohibiting them from resupplying or redeploying forces, therefore blocking them from sending reinforcements. German military could then surround the enemies and force them into surrendering. The Germans were able to prove this worked on many accounts.
In Germany, Hitler’s demand for oil put many men to work. Several expressways, known as autobahns, were built for the finest automobiles. In fact, Hitler was intrigued by such automobiles and developed his vision of war using the new, efficient modern technology of automobiles. However, Hitler’s hope of “Germany on wheels” was not a promise. Germany did not really possess any of its own oil to power Germany’s showy automobiles or its necessary war machines. Because of their indigent amount of natural resources, German chemists, “the best in the world”, according to Germany and IG scientists, about two thousand barrels of artificial fuel were made daily. Like racecars, Hitler was in a “race” to get everything ready for war. Unfortunately, still in desperate need, Germany’s dependence on coal or the later replacement octane gasoline to keep things running was a costly process that
The United States, as well as all other developed and developing countries, must chose the welfare of the earth over the huge amounts of money to be made by exploiting the earth 's riches. Our great country should become the leader in paving the way for a brighter and safer future for our next generations. The United States should also continue to develop treaties with other major countries such as China, Russia, and Japan to slow the poisoning of the earth 's air and water supply. We must act and invest now in new technologies which assist in detecting and proving theories such as global warming.
