Why did the Griffin decide to die rather than eat?
The Griffin lived alone in a cave and did not have any friends or family. He had no associations, and his knowledge of the image that looked like him was refreshing. He had lived many years, centuries, and he believed he was the last remaining of his kind. As such, the Griffin knew loneliness and solitude, which is why he sought out a sculpture that looked like him to give him a sense of company. He longed to see an image of himself and perhaps gain some self-identity with full knowledge of his appearance after years of living without knowing what he resembled. The feeling of being alone is one that he did not appreciate, and when he saw his image in the sculpture, he was happy. He had met the Minor canon who bravely and in the sense of self-sacrifice decided to accompany him to see the image at the church. After

Their explanation that they were afraid he would eat them and their children angered him, as he explained to them that the only person he would eat in the entire town is the Minor Canon. The reason for this was that he was a great man, with wonderful traits that had caused him to develop a liking towards him. When the time came to eat him, he chose not to. He rescued the Minor canon, and since he had ordered the people to serve him for the rest of his life, took him back to the town. The Griffin felt that after offering service to the people for so long in his life, the Minor canon deserved to enjoy life with privilege. He had admired his bravery, kindness, selflessness, and felt that he needed to enjoy the fruits of his hard work. He chose to die, since if he could not have the Minor canon, he did not want anything or anybody else, and the Minor canon was just too precious to him to eat. He was his
Throughout "Our Secret" Griffin explores the different characters' fears and secrets and she gives specific insights into these "secrets". Through examining others Griffin comes to terms with her own feelings, secrets, and fears. She relates to Himmler, Leo, Helene, and everyone else even though she is different than all of them. One fact that can be made about all of these characters is that they all represent humans and human emotion
First of all, he left his family and everyone who cared about him without an explanation why. That must have been the worst two years of his loved ones life when they never heard of him, until they got the news he died. Honestly, I don’t think that is what a hero is suppose to do; you don’t put your family through hell no matter what. Secondly, he set off into the wilderness not knowing what will happen. He wanted to prove that he can live off of himself, he even burned his money because he wanted to start fresh.
He was heartbroken, but eventually overcame his death
He was unsure on how to properly preserve the animal. He tried to smoke the meat, but most of it spoiled and went to waste and he was devastated for days. He didn't care much about going hungry, but that he took away the life of a majestic animal and was unable to utilise the carcass to its full extent. In his journal, he mentions the "Holiness of food" and "eating with a purpose" (Krakauer, 116), which means he did not believe in being wasteful. He believed in only taking what is necessary to survive, and nothing more.
One thing that can be seen about his character though, is that he never appreciated life or took notice of his surroundings as fully as he did after he almost dies. For example, after reaching the shore of the river while being shot at, he noticed how beautiful and fragrant the trees were and “he had no wish to perfect his escape- was content to remain in that enchanting spot until retaken” (155).
Where Griffin lived it was very sketchy, “ the house smelled funky, like mold, bacon grease, and cigarettes. The floors were bare “ (pg.36). Also, around the house there were car scraps; “ a Honda that had been relieved off of it’s wheels, door panels, seats, and stereo- sitting midway between the house and the barn “ (pg.43). Because of these surroundings
His pride made him sign his death sentence. He chose not to sign his confession because he was too proud to do so. He decided to die by hanging to die a nobleman. The flaws that eventually led him to death were also good and noble actions. He was coming from a good place, but it ended in death, which makes him a tragic hero.

He had an abiding interest in helping people die painlessly. He was the perfect person to carry out Janet¹s wishes (Larson 229).
Because of his selfless act, he died
He was an average man who made one big mistake that potentially ended his life. Even though he died for the wrong reasons he still saved many after his life because he did not sign the contract. This situation is very similar to today's justice system, someone who is accused in the court of law can fight it but in the end they are either guilty or innocent. Much like the crucible the judge offers them the lightest sentencing they can just to admit to the crime...Even if they are

And if he hadn’t lived like this he wouldn’t have had his phonograph, radio, car, and frigidaire. However, it was also this conduct that turned him into a follower, unable to make decisions for himself. This is shown in lines 23 and 24 when the speaker says, “he held the proper opinions for the time of year; When there was peace, he was for peace; when there was war, he went. He even had five children, which was the right number for a parent in his generation”. He did everything by the book just like everyone else of this time.
