“Molly! Come on, quit dragging around,” said Jenny, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward the Mercantile.
I could not help myself; I turned to look back at the stranger before entering the Mercantile. He had stopped and was staring in our direction. “Why does he keep staring at us,” I whispered to Jenny as we stepped across the threshold and into the store.
“It’s not us he’s staring at, silly- it’s you.”
“Why would he be staring at me?”
“Probably because he thinks you’re pretty-”
“I saw the way he stared into your eyes back there; for a moment, I thought you were going to stop in the middle of the street. I know he was looking at you, because he never even glanced my way.”
“But, you’re beautiful, Jenny- how could he not notice you!”
“Have you looked in a mirror lately? You’re beautiful too!”
“Do you really think so?”
“Of course, I do- you look just like Grandma Becky. I wish I had inherited her dark coloring from my mother- but no, I had to be born lily-white and fair-haired like my father.”
I could not help but giggle when she said that- Many times, I had wished I were pale and fair-haired like her and her sisters instead of dark haired and dark complexioned like my father, brother, and grandmother.
“Maybe we can go look around in that new variety store when we get through in here,” said Jenny.
“Lets do, it’ll be fun- we hardly ever get to come into town, so let’s make the most of it.” I really did want to look inside the new store. I also hoped to see the…
