Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by a .44 Derringer that is stored in the Ford’s Theatre National Historic Site. The assassination of Abraham Lincoln was a small part in the larger plan to weaken the Union so that the Confederacy may have a last hurrah. The assassination of Abraham Lincoln was an extremely destructive and led to the North to have a deep hatred towards the South. The assassination attempt on Lincoln, the Vice President, and his Secretary of State was deeply destructive to the Union. The larger plan to weaken the North was almost accomplished. John Wilkes Booth’s assassination of Abraham Lincoln wasn’t the only assassination that was planned. The Vice President and The Secretary of State and possibly General Grant were planned to be assassinated. The Vice President was going to be assassinated, but the assassin actually drank himself drunk, so he decided not to kill him. The attack on the Secretary of State was almost successful. The assassin tried to stab him and did many times in the breast and throat. The Secretary of State was saved by his eldest son and he was also stabbed. The assassin then fled the scene and later caught and hanged. The plan to kill Grant is debated all the time. Some say there was an attempt others say there was no attempt. John Wilkes Booth was killed by a Union soldier on the Garrett Farm. He hid in a barn which was burned down to find him and he was shot in the back of the neck by a Union soldier. George Azterodt was the assassin that was supposed to kill Andrew Johnson, but lost his nerve. He was killed by hanging in July 1865. Lewis Powell was the assassin that was hired to kill the Secretary of State, William Seward. He entered the Seward home and injured him and his son as well as a bodyguard. He was later captured and hung in July 1865. A lesser known conspirator was Mary Surratt. She owned a boarding house in Washington were the conspirators met and planned the assassinations. She was hung and was the first woman executed in U.S. history. In my opinion, I believe that the punishments that the conspirators received was just and fair. The punishment was execution by hanging, The hanging was just for what they did to the U.S. and what they attempted. They were treated as traitors and terrorists, which they deserved. I believe that terrorists should be put in jail if they are domestic. If they are foreign we should use the rules that are set by their country of origin.
