River had been noticing that Saint Valentine was acting even more odd than normal. He watched him closely every night waiting for him to make a mistake so that he could grab the keys off of his belt. River wanted to follow Saint Valentine to see what he was really up to. River didn’t fully believe every word that the Saint spoke. Then his opportunity came and River toke it. He had gotten the keys off Saint Valentine after they had come back from a hunt. He waited until the Saint was out of sight, he then told Shadow. “I want you to follow me and witness what I do.” Shadow being the servant had been trained to never argue with the vampire. Saint Valentine had the servant brainwashed into believing the vampire would kill them if they disobey
Some people would say that Jimmy was obviously not dedicated to a moral life because he robbed banks. Sure, Jimmy did rob banks, but not for his whole life. Once he went to Elmore and met Annabel, he wanted a new, moral life. Others may also think Jimmy was dishonest, which meant he was not trying to live morally correct. Jimmy was dishonest. He truly was, but he changed. Again, he was only dishonest a few times in his old days, but by the end of the story, he was very honest and was dedicated to being moral. The last thing that the opposing side might believe is that he was not dedicated because he did not care for other’s things. He really did not care for other’s possessions. He actually took them, instead of caring for them. But if he does not rob banks any longer, then is he still careless for those objects of others? The answer is no. He surely does not rob banks anymore, so he now does care for the possessions of others and would never steal anything again. There is no Jimmy Valentine anymore, just a Ralph D.
Two of the socs grabbed me and put my head in the fountain. I nearly drowned then i felt them let go and Johnny was standing still with the knife in his hand… i looked down and saw a dead person, I thought to myself Johnny just killed him "I had to. They were drowning you Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade… They were gonna beat me up" (Hinton ch. 4).he said. After about 5 min I said to Johnny he just killed someone,"Johnny! I nearly screamed. "What are we gonna do? They put you in the electric chair for killing people!" (Hinton ch. 4) At this point in the story Johnny is in big trouble. All because of gangs and rivalries.

There is a fine line between hypocrisy and cowardice. Arthur Dimmesdale, a principal character in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter provides a perfect example of how thin that line can be. The Scarlet Letter relates a story about sin and the many consequences of not having strength of character. The true nature of Reverend Dimmesdale's character has been debated since the first publication of the novel. Dimmesdale is considered by many to be a hypocrite because he cared more about protecting his reputation than he did about protecting the woman he loved. Others view the Reverend in a more sympathetic light and see him as not a hypocrite, but as a good man
Johnny had an abusive relationship with his parents. According to Ponyboy he says: “He would have run away…” (12). Johnny hasn’t had an easy life, his parents do not pay much attention to him and are verbally and physically abusive to him. Also, because of him being a Greaser he got beaten very badly by the Socs. In Johnny’s case he was used to being abused by his parents but after the Socs got a hold of him he saw that abuse is bad, and after almost being beaten to death he lived in fear every day. Johnny never hurts other people but when he sees others being mistreated he steps in. “I killed him”, he said slowly, “I killed that boy” (49). In this quote, Ponyboy is telling what Johnny told him after he killed Bob. Because of the Socs drowning Ponyboy, Johnny feels angry for what they were doing so he lets anger take over and he kills Bob. Later in the book, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally help save the kids from the church fire. Johnny gets hurt and has to go to the hospital. In this hospital Johnny mentions “It was worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for” ( ). Johnny realizes that the best thing he could have done was save those children, even if it meant losing his life. Because of the violence that he faced at home and with the Socs he was ok with dying because he saved the children’s
And the sky will be covered by ghostly veils. Tell me river, is it worth it?
Becoming good at a skill for most people takes many steps, and for some those steps aren’t exactly alike. The character Weng, in Suchen Christine Lim’s novel The River’s Song, exemplifies this. The novel often switches perspectives between main characters, Ping and Weng, and moves back and forth through time. Largely based around music, this novel follows both characters through where their musical journey takes them. Pings journey takes her to America to teach music, separating her from Weng for much of their adult lives.
Climate change is going to affect the arctic more dramatically than other parts of the world. A study has shown that the average temperature has risen over 2ºC from 1960-2011 ("Climate Change In the Arctic"). Just a couple weeks ago the arctic was 20ºC higher than usual. Rising temperatures are going to affect the sea ice and glaciers, vegetation and wildlife as well as infrastructure. Of course these things won't just disappear quietly, they will take many other things down with them.
In the memoir The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, the chapter titled: On the Rainy River has a central idea of resentment, embarrassment and eventual acceptance to change. The author creates this central idea with the use of a regretful tone, man vs society conflict, and dreary imagery. The theme of this chapter contributes to O’Brien’s intentions for the book because it demonstrates the struggle, shame, and or confusion each man drafted into the war experienced.
Characters in the text The Secret River by Kate Grenville represent a variation of attitudes and views towards the colonisation of Australia and the Aboriginal Australians. While many characters are indecisive about their opinion on the natives, some characters have a clear mind-set on how they are to be treated. The characters of Thomas Blackwood and Smasher Sullivan represent the two very different sides of the moral scale, and the other characters fit between these sides. Smasher is a vicious, cold-hearted man who shows no respect or humanity towards the Aboriginals. On the other hand, Blackwood’s character contrasts Smasher with his humanity and general respect to the original owners of their new home. The
The first reason Jimmy Valentine should be arrested is that even though he moved on from his old ways, he still stole large sums of money from several banks. This includes money from Richmond bank, money from logansport bank, and money from Jefferson city, leading to a total of 7300 dollars, which is a lot of money in that time period.
Jimmy Valentine was trying to live a moral life because he showed honesty. On page 5, paragraph 14 it says, “Get away from the door… He set his suitcase on the table.” This shows that Jimmy was just trying to help Agatha get out of the safe and he wasn’t trying to steal any money like he used to do. Secondly, when Jimmy was writing a letter to his friend, he mentioned that Annabel, his fiance, believed in him. This shows that Jimmy was honest about wanting to marry Annabel because he truly loved her, not just because her father owned the local bank. Lastly, after Jimmy moved, he promised to himself that he’d give away his tools to a friend, showing that he no longer wanted to be
Even though, the Count tried to become a new person both physically and mentally, the old Edmond Dantes still interfered with his actions. When Morrel comes to the Count and tells him about Valentines poison, the Count thinks nothing of it, but as soon as Morrel told the Count that he loves Valentine, old Edmond Dantes shines through. When Valentine and the Count converse in chapter sixty-one, the Count remarks, “I have not closed my eyes for an instant during the last four nights; for the last four nights I have been watching over you to protect and preserve you for our friend Maximilian” (Dumas, 526). This shows that the Count did not really care for Valentine, but as soon as a loyal family friend as the Morrel’s asked for his help, Edmond Dantes stepped up and would do anything to lend a helping hand. Also, after the Count and Mercedes talk with each other, and Mercedes convinces Edmond not to kill her son, the Count starts to reflect and
While those bodies of the African Union are essential to its daily functions, many other small councils and committees have formed over the years. The Executive Council, which is composed of ministers selected by states, decide on the matters of trade, food, and health. The council is also held accountable by the Assembly of the African Union, and helps prepare anything that the Assembly may need. In addition, the Peace and Security Council helps maintain internal peace among member nations. Overall, these are just a few of the councils and committees that make up the structure of the AU.
