The Renaissance took place in Italy due to two main reasons. First of all, the position of the city-states of Italy on the Mediterranean Sea made them an almost mandatory stop for traders, which brought not only goods, but also ideas. Second, after the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, many intellectuals of Constantinople found refuge in Italy, bringing with them works of the ancient Greece and Rome, and also new ideas.
