Meanwhile in Paris back in the mid- 1930's the SS Normandie was facing troubling difficulties. During May 17, 1935, the Normandie's crew joined the ship strike that was going on in Europe. The French government failed to settle the strike and in return the departure of the Champlain was canceled. As a result the Champlain lost business with its passengers and lost the chance to have profitable gold shipments to companies. The Normandie's crew decided to join the Chamberlain refusing to set sail until their wage demands have been met. This event led to President Gaston Doumergue postponing his inspection of the Normandie due to the strike.
