John C. “Jack” Walton, gained office as the governor after the endorsement by the Farmer-Labor Reconstruction League. The Farmer-Labor Reconstruction league was a group of labor unions; the Farmer’s Union, and parts of the Socialist Party that joined together to enact favorable labor legislation in this period of agriculture and industrial confusion. Walton turned on his backers and his bad decisions of other duties of his office by tying to get certain programs running which led to his impeachment by the legislature.

During this time he was closely associated with the railroad workers and saw their consistent oppression by their capitalist employers. Baltimore and Ohio railroad workers went on strike because the companies had reduced workers wages twice over the previous year. The strikers refused to let the trains to run until the most recent pay cut was returned to the employees, so West Virginia militia was sent they refused to intervene. The strike took over Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, St. Louis and Missouri had gained control. Hayes sent federal troops which ended the strike. The role that Hayes played in this event was Leader of the economy, Commander in Chief and Chief Executive because he had to take control of the strike so he can bring peace to his country and to show people had everything in control.
The abuse of power in order to make a profit is a prominent theme today in current events and throughout the novel The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Today, people in positions of power use that power to take advantage of their workers and customers in order to benefit themselves. In The Grapes of Wrath, most of the Joads’ problems stem from people using the power they have to deceive them. Economic abuse of power is not only prevalent today, but is also prevalent in The Grapes of Wrath as shown through the bank owners, salesmen, brokers, and the landowners.

Long has the human race struggled with the ideology of power. People struggle with using and respecting power correctly. People in positions of power follow a pattern, a rigid pattern that leaves others broken and cheated in it’s wake. People who are awarded power often become ignorant of those without.
