World War I started in The Balkans near the end of July 1914. ‘Why did World War I happen?’ you might ask. Well There are multiple reasons as to why it started. A couple examples of the cause are: militarism, imperialism, and the growth of nationalism-which were all tied together by being mostly based off of disagreement. These three things are what I will be discussing in the next three paragraphs. The first topic is militarism. The definition of militarism is “the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests”. The way that this coincides with World War I is mostly based on disagreement. Some people wanted this situation, while others didn’t, which led to overreacting that soon led to war. Imperialism is the “rule by an emperor”, or “a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force”. Imperialism was also a contributing factor of disagreement leading to war. Some places wanted imperialism and others didn’t. No one wanted to let other people or places choose what they wanted for themselves, so they had to carry the small problem into a bigger problem, causing a war. Last but not least, the third topic, which is the growth of nationalism. Nationalism is “patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts”. The reason nationalism is a contributing factor to the war is because some people just flat out didn’t want to be patriotic in their feelings, principles, or efforts.
