The United States intervention in Vietnam is seen by the world as America’s greatest loss and longest war. Before the start of the war in Vietnam, the thought of the United States losing this war was unheard of because America was technologically superior, no country in south East Asia could contend with them. Lyndon B. Johnson announced that he would not be the president to allow South East Asia to go Communist . These protests affected the government’s decision on rolling thunder and on the 31 March 1968 Lyndon B. Johnson announced that there would be no more bombing above the 20th parallel. Although Lyndon B. Johnson reduced the amount of bombs being dropped, the bombs themselves had caused huge devastation to Vietnam and by ‘1970 the Americans had dropped more bombs on Vietnam than they had on any other previous target’ . These protests had caused more uproar in 1970 at Kent state university national guards openly shot at protesters killing them; this helped destroy the governments mandate even more by more American citizens questioning the mandate of the containment policy.
To succeed politically within South Vietnam itself the United States had to ‘win the hearts and minds of public’. However the atrocities which had struck Vietnam, caused disarray with the public of Vietnam, one case where this is true was the Massacre at My Lai in March 1968; this was the killing of 300 villagers mainly women and children who were raped, murdered, and mutilated; this was carried out by American soldiers who thought the villagers were supposedly harbouring Vietcong.
