Why Diversity Is Important

The article “The trouble with diversity: How we learned to identity and ignore inequality”, was written by Walter Benn Michaels and published by NY times on Dec, 24,2006. The author argues that The Great Gatsby give us a vision of our society divided into races rather than into economic classes. The Trouble with Diversity argues that our enthusiastic celebration of "difference" masks our neglect of the difference that really matters—the one between rich and poor.

Did the Age of Jim Crow ever end? Americans see “race” as a defined, indubitable feature of nature. Racism- the act of ascribing bone deep features to people to then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them- inevitably follows from this inalterable condition. White supremacist ideals, for instance, espouse unfounded ideas that revere the white man and scorn those of color, while also serving as a nonsensical justification for practices such as slavery, racial segregation, and Jim Crow. In “The Trouble with Diversity”, Walter Benn Michaels dismisses the concept and veracity behind race, as if it weren’t a societal issue worth addressing. To ignore the reality of race would be the equivalent of ignoring the plight and shared experiences of minority groups. “The Trouble with Diversity” insinuates that “diversity” is incompatible with the society we live in; this does not mean that people of color should have to encounter racial prejudices, whether in subtle or discernible ways.

Diversity can refer to many things all over the world. Diversity can be defined as different statuses at are together collectively. “Diversity encompasses complex differences and similarities in perspective, identities and points of view among members if an institution. It includes important and interrelated dimensions of human identity such as race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, socio-economic status, nationality, citizenship, religion, sexual orientation, ability and age.” (“Luther College”) In conclusion, diversity is a group of different individuals that are grouped together; focus word being “different” and “together”. Diversity is very important at any setting because it challenges the way people think, it result in an effective way of analyzing thing because there are different perspectives that are being thought of. Therefore, diversity on college campuses in the United States is important because it increases academic and social interactions.

Diversity has always been a key component of American society. From its beginnings, the United States has struggled with deciding who establishes the norms and values of society, given that we are a nation built primarily through immigration (Bessett, 1997). Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) people have been a part of society throughout history. There is evidence of same sex relationships at least as far back as ancient Greece (Crompton, 2003). Over time, negative societal attitudes in the western world developed and led to active oppression of LGBT community. These attitudes were then exported around the world. Diversity is an important element of the United States of America, but also has been a topic debated over for many years. The arrival of immigrants in the United States in the 19th and early 20th century created many problems with how to deal with new cultures and naturalization of citizens of different races. These immigrants faced much adversity in the process of gaining citizenship due to racial qualifications for naturalization and fitting into separate race categories. Since white was the superior race in the United States, immigrants fought to prove their qualifications to fit into the “white” category in many ways. Throughout these struggles, the idea of race was socially constructed by the Court during important naturalization

The United States is diverse whether we will accept that fact or not. And equality among races and genders is thought by so many to be true. But, there have been numerous studies based on cold, hard facts that prove this belief of equality to be false. The belief that if a child aspires to be wealthy and successful also may not be completely correct in some areas of the United States. Studies have also been done to stand by this assumption. There are many different judgements individuals can make about another culture based on various opinions or facts.

Diversity allows us to understand the differing cultures throughout the world and gives us the ability to learn about the world around us. Without diversity, we are limiting ourselves to the cultural ideas and practices we’re involved in and aren’t understanding other ways of life around the world. My family from my mom and dad’s side come from many different backgrounds. My parents have taught me since I was a kid to respect everyone around me. I have members in my family who are European, African American, Native American, and likely other backgrounds that I haven’t been able to connect with yet. I also have family members who are part of the LGBT community. This diversity within my family has allowed me to learn about the different cultures

Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.

Diversity in society helps us to grow as individuals and open our minds to different ways of life. When you are exposed to different ways of life and see how other cultures carry on then you are no longer closed to the idea that we are all different. Diversity also promotes tolerance. In terms of being tolerant that means diversity can help us accept other cultures, it can even adapt some cultural ways and values into our society. The point is, we are all different. Yet the differences that we have between us can be used to strengthen society as we know it. Diversity allows us the opportunity to learn, grow, understand new ways of living, and experience life to the fullest. Without diversity, we are closed off in our own worlds, but with it, we expand our knowledge and we are no longer ignorant. When you are aware of the differences and embrace them, then you have taken the blind fold off to living differently and you are a better person for it. The key is exposure and using what you learned to increase tolerance and decrease racism. Diversity has been a force for change because it boosts educational innovation which leads to educational growth, more jobs, and interaction between diverse cultures.

Honestly diversity can often be a difficult piece to swallow, but once it does that dance over your taste buds you will begin to realize just how boring it would be without it. In this day in age we are all so mixed from various strands it is a wonder that labels still exists. Diversity mixes things up and keeps life interesting, without it we wouldn’t have the culture we share today.

The term equality and diversity is used to define the equal opportunities and human rights within the values of society. The meaning of this term holds all legal obligations for protection against discrimination of various characteristics; most commonly including gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, culture, race and ethnicity. Whilst protection from these forms of discrimination is integral, it is equally important to ensure that equality and diversity is reinforced in the workplace; equal opportunities is fundamental for professional practice. The meaning of equal opportunities is to ensure that all individuals are treated equally despite their character and their background, therefore avoiding any individuals being disadvantaged in their career due to judgmental, bias or prejudice opinions. For example, the ideal candidate for a position in the workplace should be decided upon the qualifications, knowledge and experience of the candidate, rather than placing a focus upon personal aspects that should have no negative effect towards performance in the workplace.

As of July 1, 2011, there are 36, 708, 083 people in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2017a). 1.2% higher than the population last year, which was 36, 264, 604 people of all ages and both sexes (Statistics Canada, 2017b). The growth of population in Canada, which in this case powered largely by immigration, increases not only the human capital, but the diversity in every province as well. Hence, as diversity expands, there is also a rampant growth in religion. In 2011, there are 108 religions observed in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2011) - Christianity, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, and Hindu – to name a few. These demographics have connotations on how diversity in school is also evident.

We live in a society where people come from different countries, they belong to different cultural, religion, ethnic groups, and races. All these factors come together and contributes to differences that make us unique from each other. Hence, a multicultural country with huge diversity. This reflection journal will cover what “human race” is and what role it plays in ones’ personal life and in a nursing profession. Moreover, what bias, assumptions and judgements are, and how to avoid them. Lastly, what caring is and what role does it play in nursing.
