Although I didn’t realize back then, the environment I grew up in Korea lacked diversity. People I knew looked the same as me and spoke the same language. Thus, I faced a series of culture shocks when I first came to the U.S. Particularly, I was shocked by the different aspects of diversity and how people were grouped into various racial and ethnic categories. While I didn’t stand out from others back in Korea, in the U.S., I was categorized as an Asian and I was considered as a minority.
Diversity can be defined as a state of having a variety of different aspects or characteristics. Diversity is the coalescing of people of many different races, backgrounds, and beliefs. Other aspects of diversity include religious affiliation, gender, and sexual orientation. Diversity is important because it allows for many different opinions to be heard. In terms of trying to solve a problem, having many different viewpoints and ideas are better than having none at all. The purpose of diversity is to include and recognize each and every individual's unique characteristics.
Diversity can be found anywhere and can always teach you something if you keep an open mind. I grew up relatively unaware of how different the world could be from my own life, but when I went to high school it was a wake up call for me. Diverse viewpoints and backgrounds can lead to the most amazing achievements and working together is the only way to get there.
Did the Age of Jim Crow ever end? Americans see “race” as a defined, indubitable feature of nature. Racism- the act of ascribing bone deep features to people to then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them- inevitably follows from this inalterable condition. White supremacist ideals, for instance, espouse unfounded ideas that revere the white man and scorn those of color, while also serving as a nonsensical justification for practices such as slavery, racial segregation, and Jim Crow. In “The Trouble with Diversity”, Walter Benn Michaels dismisses the concept and veracity behind race, as if it weren’t a societal issue worth addressing. To ignore the reality of race would be the equivalent of ignoring the plight and shared experiences of minority groups. “The Trouble with Diversity” insinuates that “diversity” is incompatible with the society we live in; this does not mean that people of color should have to encounter racial prejudices, whether in subtle or discernible ways.
Famous author and speaker, Maya Angelou once said ““It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” Diversity can be defined as people coming together from different nationalities, races, religions, sexes and sexual orientation to form a group, organization or community. A diverse organization is one that values the difference and similarities in people. It is one that recognizes that different people can bring unique ideas and perception to different things. Diversity is what keeps the world spinning because without diversity everyone would be the same and you wouldn’t be able to truly understand yourself. Diversity can be defined as different statuses at are together collectively. “Diversity encompasses complex differences and similarities in perspective, identities and points of view among members if an institution. It includes important and interrelated dimensions of human identity such as race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, socio-economic status, nationality, citizenship, religion, sexual orientation, ability and age.” (“Luther College”) In conclusion, diversity is a group of different individuals that are grouped together; focus word being “different” and “together”. Diversity is very important at any setting because it challenges the way people think, it result in an effective way of analyzing thing because there are different perspectives that are being thought of. Therefore, diversity on college campuses in the United States is important because it increases academic and social interactions.
Diversity is an important element of the United States of America, but also has been a topic debated over for many years. The arrival of immigrants in the United States in the 19th and early 20th century created many problems with how to deal with new cultures and naturalization of citizens of different races. These immigrants faced much adversity in the process of gaining citizenship due to racial qualifications for naturalization and fitting into separate race categories. Since white was the superior race in the United States, immigrants fought to prove their qualifications to fit into the “white” category in many ways. Throughout these struggles, the idea of race was socially constructed by the Court during important naturalization
Diversity is the state of being different. Diversity can be in terms of race, sex, age, and nationality. It can be seen everywhere in this country and every other country in the world. We are diverse in the workforce, schools, hospitals, and in the community.
Diversity; America thrives in it. You could call us the most diverse country with all the cultures, religions and variations of races. Our population will be stepping into a crucial stage with our generations aging into record numbers thanks to modern medicine. Living longer and having less children is a recipe for an older population. Other counties are also heading towards this inexperienced phase in human history.

Diversity is known as having people who are different races or who have different cultures working in a group or organization. A diverse organization is one that values the difference in people. It is one that recognizes that people with different backgrounds, expertise, attitudes and experiences bring fresh ideas and perceptions to the organization.
Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.
The population growth from 2000 to 2010 shows the United States’ changing racial and ethnic diversity. In the last decade, there has been a significant modification in relation to the Hispanic community. A vast amount of data in regard of the growth of the total population came from an increase in those who claimed their ethnicity as Hispanic or Latino: the growth rate showed more than four times the growth rate of the total population (43 %, compared to only 9.7 %). These facts clearly show the growing importance of Hispanics, who are becoming an increasingly crucial part of the United States; the labeled ‘minority group’ is extremely incorrect if we consider the growth percentage during the last decade, and the future data is not likely to sustain this label anymore.
For the most part I have not seen a whole lot of diversity in my community but I hear about diversity all the time on the news. I feel like we have benefited from the influence of people from different parts of the world because it helps us understand other people’s cultures and traditions. It helps us to understand the diversity in the world and to better accept it as a whole.
Growing up, my understanding of diversity came from watching television and reading books; from these sources, I deduced that diversity meant embracing people with a different skin color or culture from your own in order to realize that they are people just like everyone else. This narrow view of diversity came from the fact that I had little personal experience with diversity. I grew up in a small town, and everyone in my school was either Native American or white. There didn’t appear to be any discrimination based on this difference; any adversity that anyone faced was based on personality differences or family feuds. That all changed when I started college.
