While cats can reign as the world champions of night vision, dog lovers can rejoice: their beloved canines can also navigate in dim light, if not as cleverly as their feline companions. How can dogs pass when the lights go out, and on a scale of 20/20, can the canines be face to face with humans?

The ability of dogs to see in the dark comes from the structure of their eyes. They have large pupils, which let in more light. Your retinas have a large number of cells sensitive to light and movement, called bars. These distinguish the light from the shadow. And most importantly, the eyes of dogs, such as those of cats, some birds and fish, and nocturnal predatory animals, have a mirror-like membrane called tapetum lucidum in the back of the eye. The simple answer is that they see differently, and in some cases, better. Dogs see shades of gray, while the world of a human being is brightly colored. The human retina has more conical cells, which distinguish color, while the retinas of dogs have more rods, which need much less illumination to detect the gray spectrum. In the penumbra or inner semidarkness, a dog can see more clearly than its human.
