Why Do Men Deserve Their Rights?

The Declaration of Independence clearly states, “all men are created equal.” However that is not the case early in America’s life. African Americans are taken from their homes and put to work as slaves. Women are discriminated against because of their gender. People with in poverty had few freedoms. When the Declaration of Independence says all people have a right to liberty, it is lying. Many races, gender, and social classes were discriminated and given limited freedoms. One of the most known is slavery.

The concept of social justice is based of human rights and equality, this is the way people are treated in everyday life. The text I am currently studying is The story of Tom Brennan and I am seeing how this has some aspects of social justice like alcohol abuse and property vandalism.

In the second paragraph of "The Declaration of Independence" is one of history's most regularly quoted passages. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” (Jefferson) The Declaration motivated the colonist to seek independence from from the King of Great Britain. Even though the Declaration was trying to point out a positive outcome it does not go into detail about what the values of Americans should be, which is why not all citizens are treated equally. We are not living into the promises today because there are so many negativity that is happening in America today.

Social justice is a common topic you often hear about in school and through social media, with our latest presidential election. Two summer’s ago when I attended Right Angle at Michigan State University for the Study of Education, I was able to take a Social Justice class. Social Justice is when there is a society that is always questioning “simple” ideas such as racism, poverty and hierarchy. In the world we live in today, we are able to witness how Civil Disobedience is portrayed through different actions of rebelling against orders made by our government. Alongside peaceful resistance to laws positively impact a free society, in that it’s able to express the majority of American’s opinions, without hurting anyone.

Matthew Robinson, professor at Harvard Medical School, defines social justice as existing only when all people share a common humanity and therefore have a right to equitable treatment

Social justice is that status of the society where “equity” and “just treatment” of individuals exists. It is not limited to safeguarding the rights but also comes with responsibility to maintain a “society for all” providing equal opportunities. A socially just society can be achieved after examining the inequalities and seeking opportunity to curb the same by total elimination. The concept of social justice varies with the different philosophical approaches about the distribution or allocation of resources.

Oftentimes, the definition of social justice can be misinterpreted or misunderstood. The true definition of social justice is often structured by governmental implications but is the fair and proper administration of laws to each individual conforming to the natural law. Equality is supposed to be equally distributed amongst individuals nationally, but can sometimes be taken advantage of and be taken away from people who deserve it the most. Generally, those who view social justices as a right, also value people above profits.

Social justice is mutually a practice and a goal. The goal of social justice is complete and equal contribution by all people in a society that is equally designed to meet their needs. Social justice allows for all members of society to be physically and psychologically safe and secure. It is a set of values that allow us to understand what is right and wrong in our world regardless of race, culture and economic status. That we take care of those in need of help, so that they can take care of themselves. Social justice allows equal rights and opportunities to everyone in society.

The term social justice is normally used when referring to the ideas of equality and providing equal opportunities to pupils within school, regardless of their background, history or circumstances. Views of social justice can change depending on who is discussing the topic.

Social Justice is defined as “the equal distribution of opportunities, rights, and responsibility despite differences in physical traits and/or beliefs and behavior. It is an international and multifaceted issue that fights for better treatment and equality of people.” (“Pachamama Alliance,” 2017). According to this definition, my understanding of social justice is that it is a way to advocate for other individuals in order to assist their needs in society. For example, I would want to advocate for Hispanic mothers and children who have been through abuse. My empathy towards this group started because of my personal history with an abusive father who suffered from alcoholism. “Empathy involves thinking about a person and the challenges he or she is facing and coming to understand what it is like for that person to have that experience.” (Cameron & Keenan, 2013, p. 72).
