Malcolm X once said, “Human rights are something you were born with. Human rights are your God-given rights. Human rights are the rights that are recognized by all nations of this earth.” If you look at our world today, most people would say everyone has equal rights. But does everybody really have equal rights? The answer is equality is limited. Everybody has equal rights above the age of 18. Anybody under 18 years old is not protected underneath certain amendments. There are some amendments in which minors are protected under, but there are many where they are not. If you look at the constitution many of the amendments do not protect minors. If you look at the first amendment which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting …show more content…
Some common rights that adults have and minors don’t is children are not allowed to vote, hold property, consent to medical treatment, sue or be sued, or enter into certain types of contracts, and the list goes on. In some cases, a child is able to do these things but must have a parent or legal guardian act on his or her behalf. How is this fair? If we look at the constitution, almost every amendments says “people”. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m almost positive all ages are counted as a person. Merriam- Webster dictionary defines person as “a human being” or “a human being regarded as an individual”. A human is defined as “a member of the species Homo sapiens”. Based off of the dictionary minors are counted as people and human beings. So why does only a few amendments only protect these people and human beings above the age of 18? The law recognizes that children under 18 aren't emotionally or physically ready to handle the responsibility attached to legal activities. The law implements ages of majority designed to define when a person has the ability to exercise his or her rights responsibly. These usually vary by state, but they govern everything from the right to drive to the right to marry. Amendment 14 recognizes this also by giving parents the right to raise their children as they want as long as there is no …show more content…
Minors have just as many opinions and deserve a voice. The mental and physical maturity of minors should not limit their voices. I’m not saying we should give minors the right to drink and get married at 13 years old. I’m saying give them a chance. Believe it or not, lots of minors are very intelligent. They have good opinions, interesting points of views, and could change others ideas. Don’t limit minors voice or rights. One day they will no longer be counted as minors. One day the children you are keeping quiet will be older then 18 and then they will voice their opinions. It’s just a matter of time. Why push them off to the side until they are 18 when they can speak
“In general, people under the age of majority … have fewer rights and responsibilities than adults. For example, you must be 18 to vote, enter into legal contracts, or purchase a lottery ticket in most states. But states, including Tennessee, also recognize that people under the age of majority still have to make certain decisions on their own, and may not benefit from a parent's consent.” (3)
Juveniles should be tried as adults when they commit serious crimes as opposed to rehabilitation or various forms of lesser sentencing. The rate of juveniles in prison has increased over the years. Many young adults and children often seek for attention which leads them to cause trouble out in the streets. There are risk levels that officers have to make in order to help the juveniles or if committing a serious crime, they should pay the consequences. Many may oppose and think that young adults and children are not adults, but they should be punished for the crimes they have done.
From this point on, they are held responsible for any legal decision they make. They are held responsible because the government believes they can make qualified decisions that will have short and long implications. When a minor becomes 18 they are given a laundry list of new rights such as sign a binding contract, enlist in the military, participate in local and federal elections, and to serve and sell alcohol as a bartender. Although and 18 year old can serve and sell alcohol, they are not allowed to make decisions on the amount of alcohol to consume. Society thinks it will harm their mental growth along with their physical
Most people are against juveniles getting tried as adult in adult court because they might say “their young and doesn’t mean any harm” or “a minor doesn’t belong in a jail full of adult criminals.” But I say if they can commit a crime they can do the time. Also, most juveniles tried as adults or placed in adult facilities jails or prison, are denied education and most likely won’t finish school but if they were free it would most likely be the same because they either wouldn’t attend school or when they do go to school they cause problems and have a list of referrals’ or even kicked out of school or attends an alternative
Once an adolescent reaches the age of 18, they have the ability to join or be drafted into the military, vote, buy tobacco, get married, serve on a jury, sign contracts and be prosecuted as adults. They have all of these rights, so why is it that the only thing an 18 year old can’t do is drink alcohol? Once you hit the age of 18, you are an adult, and should be treated as an adult, so therefore you should be trusted enough that you can make your own decisions on how much alcohol should be consumed (Drinking Age).
When a person turn 18 in most states they are considered adults under law and have most of the same rights and responsibilities as all other American adults. Their new rights include being able to vote, gamble, buy cigarettes, acquire guns, sign contracts, view adult material, get married, make a will, make their own medical choices and much more. With these newly acquired rights comes the burden of additional responsibilities and consequences.
When a person reaches the age of eighteen they are seen as a legal adult: “adults should have the right to make their own decisions about alcohol consumption”(Drinking Age). Legal adulthood comes with all different types of rights and responsibilities with drinking not included. Eighteen year olds are given the right to vote, to smoke, to have consensual sex, and to get married without parental consent. this give citizens the ability to make decisions for the future of the country, the ability to do something that could cause future health problems, the ability to do something that could result in a baby which is additional responsibility, and the ability to separate from a family to start a new one. The responsibilities of being a legal adult are having total responsibility for one's actions and being trusted to not break the law because of being able to be charged as an adult now. An eighteen year old is also possibly in charge of someone's life depending on the type of case they could serve as a jury member on if selected. An eighteen year old boy is required to sign up for a system that if selected he would have to possibly die fighting for the country(What You Can). If eighteen year olds are old enough to fight for their country and old enough to make decisions that affect the health of themselves and the life of another person then why are they not trusted to make their own decisions regarding alcohol?
If 18 is considered the age of adulthood, then a person at the age of 18 should be permitted to enjoy the rights and responsibilities that becoming an adult entails, including
When you are 18 you get privileges like being able to vote for a president. (Mitch Adams lowering the drinking age Page 1) When you turn 18 can go to war and take the risk of dying for your country. (Mitch Adams lowering the drinking age Page 1)Even after a long day of fighting you still can not just relax and have a cold beer. When you are 18 and go to court you are considered an adult (Valerie Richardson Coors Urges lower drinking age Page 2) and shouldn't an adult be
First, Americans 18 years old already have many adult rights. America believes that people 18 years old are legally considered an adult in this country. According to New York Times article named “Return the Drinking Age to 18, and Enforce It” mentioned that “American 18 years old have the right to vote, marry, buy guns, get a tattoo, vote in local or general election, and join the military.” Americans 18 years old have enough responsibilities to do many things these days. Some laws don’t have to get parents’ permission to do it. If America allows minimum legal drinking age, then our teenagers will learn more and figure out new responsibilities in life. Since high school doesn’t teach teenagers how to be an adult, it’s a great opportunity for a student who’s ready for adult life. American should allow 18 years old to drink alcohol as well as other many adult rights.
Once a person reaches the age of 18, they are allowed to tattoo their bodies, smoke tobacco, gamble and even enlist if they wanted to! As an adult, they want to be treated as one but how can they feel like an adult if hanging around with their friends and drinking beer while watching TV is illegal? Of course, that does not stop them, though. The United States is one of the few countries in which still have such a high minimum drinking age. Although most people think young adults (18-year olds) are irresponsible, the minimum drinking age should be lowered to 18 because they deserve to be recognized as adults in order to avoid illegal, uncontrolled drinking and other illegal actions.
Turning 18 years means that a person has become a responsible adult. Thus one receives the rights and responsibilities of an adult which includes; taking responsible of life and death, be prosecuted as an adult, can join the army, sign contracts and the right to vote amongst others. All these shows that at 18 a person can do all the things that a 21 years person can
In every state, eighteen-year olds are legally permitted to drive, live as they choose, and work where they choose. Eighteen-year olds pay taxes as other adults do, are subject to all criminal and civil laws, and are punished, jailed and even executed for crimes they might commit against such laws. They are also permitted to hold most local, state and federal government public offices, and can sponsor and pass new laws if elected. Again, the only exception to complete adult
Why should equality rights should be legal. For a fact whether you women man child, elders you should have equals rights. Many times it leads to diversity and rage it's very useful like this practically affects women more like they were finally able to vote and this right is known as woman suffrage. Everyone should have the same rights because one it's fair, two people won’t need to go against other people. Three it would be more peaceful and “it can help improve our public value “.
