Did you know paying students for good grades can lower a student’s motivation to learn? Schools would probably want the opposite effect on a student. In fact, paying students for good grades can lead to other effects such as lowering academic performances. In addition, it can weaken a relationship between a student and a teacher. Wouldn’t it also create competition between students? They would possible compare their savings with each other. Paying students for good grades is a bad idea because students lose the love of learning, it leads to classroom problems, and it lowers academic performances. To begin with, students should not be paid for good grades because it leads to classroom problems. According to the NEA article, “Many teachers also say paying students for grades leads to practical problems in the classrooms, including pressure to inflate grades and conflict with students and parents.” This means students or parents would want to raise their or their child’s grades even if their grades say otherwise. Students would earn more money even if they don’t deserve it. This could lead to competition between students by comparing their savings with each other. Sanford Dornbush, director of the Stanford Center for Youth Development states, “Students who receive money for grades will in long run have lower academic performances.” This leads to students struggling as they move in school or college. The effect of this is students not fully learning or understanding concepts and therefore struggling in the future. It is a school’s job to make sure their students understand what they are learning so they can have a better future. If that doesn’t happen, the majority of students will not succeed in their life.
