Why Do We Choose Apollo 13?

Apollo 13 was a successful failure because they got the astronauts home safely, but never completed their mission.

Those inspiring words of the first man on the moon sure have made their mark in history. Not only did Apollo 11, the first successful mission in landing man on the moon, affect future space discovery, it impacted the world, by helping people understand how much they can be capable. For those reasons , putting man on the moon was and still is a significant moment to this day for all people.

As I have mentioned so many times in my previous posts, I'm so into watching and reading up on Apollo 13 mission which goes back to 1970.

Apollo 13 was the seventh attempted mission to go to the moon for the third time in April 11th 1970. The men who were assigned to that mission were Jim Lovell Fred Haise and Ken Mattingly. However Ken Mattingly got diagnosed with the measles, so they had to replace Ken with Jack Swigert who was the backup command module pilot for the Odyssey.

Apollo 13 was launched in April 1970. There was an explosion onboard the shuttle three-fourths of the way to the moon, which damaged fuel and oxygen cells. Getting the astronauts safely back to earth was difficult, but the completion on it proved that space exploration could continue even in the mist of huge challenges. The Apollo Space Program was one of the earliest space programs and it brought about huge advances. The Apollo 11 mission was a huge accomplishment, not only for the United States, but for the entire future of space exploration. The mission impacted the world as we know it, and opened up a whole new realm for us to explore. Apollo 11 was a massive undertaking many thought would never succeed, but now it could be considered the most memorable space experience of all time. Because of its magnitude, many writers wrote about the mission. The writers of that time wrote about the chance for disaster, the jaw dropping launch, the first steps on the moon, and the controversy that surrounded the first mission to the moon.

Apollo 11 was a goal that was set by the president, John F. Kennedy, on May 25th, 1961. The goal was to travel through space, land on the moon and return back to Earth. The three astronauts to carry out this mission were Neil Armstrong (the commander), Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. (the lunar module pilot), and Michael Collins (command module pilot). The subject that I chose to research is the Apollo missions. After reading 50 Years of Americans in Space I was amazed and the continuous path of discoveries and exploration. When NASA was just beginning it had a spaceflight program that’s goals were to simply be able to survive out in space. From there they continued to push the boundaries, to try harder and get farther and in 1969 they landed on the moon. Along the way so many questions were asked, theories were tested, and lives were risked and lost.

On May 25, 1961 President John F. Kennedy paved the way for the world’s first lunar landing when he announced the US’s ambitious goal to place an American on the moon before the end of the decade. This historic announcement was fueled by desires to beat the Soviet Union, and show the United State’s dominance, the need for a uniting cause among the American people, and a desire to lead the world in the scientific field.

It all started on April 11,1970 when the Apollo 13 crew took off for the third lunar landing mission. This mission was obviously a successful take off at Cape canaveral florida carrying three astronauts by the names James A. Lovell, John L Swigert, and Fred W.Haise. These men were supposed to be the fifth and sixth men to walk on the moon. After being several miles away from earth one of the oxygen tanks blew which caused tragedy for the space crew.

Apollo 17 was a very interesting lunar mission, and the goal of the mission was to conduct a geological survey of the moon. The mission also had several other purposes such as conducting scientific experiments. The reason why it landed in the Taurus-littrow highlands is because it was a place on the moon that had not yet been explored yet. Scientists were hoping to get some interesting new rock samples. The mission took place on December 7, 1972.
