Why Do Women Choose To Have Abortion

There are many reason why a woman may choose to have an abortion. Of the women who reported having an abortion, 21 % said they made the choice because of inadequate finances, 11% were too young and/or immature, 3% was due to the baby having possible health problems and less than 1% said they made the decision because of being raped or because of incest. There were also other reasons given. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were 730,322 abortions reported in 2011.

One is if the baby had some sort of health issue and the doctors discovered it early on in the pregnancy. Nobody would want their child to lead a life of pain and constantly taking medication so the person considering the abortion would feel as if she was doing it for her unborn child which in her mind would be justified. The second reason is if a woman is raped, because if she went through with the pregnancy, the baby would be a constant reminder of the guy who raped her. These are the reasons supporting the girl’s decision to follow through with an abortion because as mentioned before all these reasons affect the girl and the baby in a negative way.

What are the reasons behind having an abortion? And, does abortion solve their problems? Pregnancy happens under different circumstances, some which are planned and some are unplanned and are unexpected, some women are unable to continue with their pregnancy and have no other choice. Abortion may solve the problem of an unwanted child, but it is not the answer to all unwanted pregnancies, in fact, many women are against it, many say “that if they are given a choice between keeping their unborn child and aborting it, 85 per cent will chose to keep the child” (Reachout.com, 2014). Abortion is not a blanket problem and we are unable to foresee every case possible, therefore, each case must be treated appropriately and according to the circumstances surrounding it, and a solution that best work with the reasons should be found, rather than sweeping it under the carpet.

We all live our lives as we please all in accordance to the law, but when it comes to abortion people start to judge and try to regulate how others live and interfere in their personal choices. We live in a country based on freedoms, and women have and should continue to have the freedom to the choice of an abortion. A woman’s right to choose abortion is a fundamental right recognized by the US Supreme Court. The courts also have a category of classes called the ‘near-suspect’ classes, which include gender. Gender deserves protection from possible discrimination at the hands of the majority. Women constitute a majority of American’s and have been discriminated in the past. The Landmark case Roe v. Wade was decided and remains the law of the land. Making laws against abortions don’t stop abortions from happening; they just make it less safe, which in many cases leads to death. Therefore idea of supporting pro-life is contradictory, this is why the nation should be pro-choice. No child should be brought into this world where they are not wanted or are not able to live a normal life. Most people who are against abortion will never even become pregnant, so they should not be making laws against it. Pregnancy is a private and personal matter. Outlawing abortion is discriminatory and unfortunately abortions are being transformed from a right to a privilege for most women.

Having a pro-choice viewpoint is not something that a person chooses overnight. I went through seven years of sexual education before I really understood abortion and could make an educated decision on my choice of sides. I have gone from being totally against the abortion procedure, to fully accepting it. I believe that before you can really say that you do not believe in abortion you have to come up against it in your own life. I know several women who have had abortions, not so they could party or have fun, but so they wouldn't ruin their entire lives because of a mistake.
